Othello Community Hospital purchased a fire pump for its newly constructed addition. The need for a special pump came as a surprise to the hospital board, but state law says the pump is needed because of low local water pressure during the summer months. The hospital addition itself is getting the finishing touches.

Frank Teas of Stevens County recently hooked a 10-pound, 4-ounce rainbow trout. Teas is thrilled with his catch. “It’s the biggest fish I’ve ever caught,” he said. Teas has fished for nearly 50 years, much of it in the Beaver Lake area where he grew up.

Hoping to keep the regional sugar beet industry alive, Pacific Northwest Sugar Co. is seeking federal help. Despite a disastrous first year in the sugar-refining business, the company, and many of its growers, is pushing for future successes. To do so, a $20 million federal loan guarantee is being sought. The plant hopes the financing will resolve start-up problems before the fall beet harvest. If the plant folds, 50 local growers could go bankrupt and 300 factory jobs would be lost.

Every Saturday in Newport Earth Market is open for business. The market has been open since May 15, and features fresh produce, flowers, shrubs. Vendors will bargain from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. through October.

Arcadia Elementary School teacher Ed Rooney was named “Teacher of the Year” by area WalMart stores. Rooney was among more than 2,500 teachers nationwide to receive the honor. Rooney’s honor carries a $500 grant for Arcadia.

A group of teens has proposed construction in the city park of a veterans memorial to be made of bronze. The sculpture is a replica rifle and helmet, with space for names of local vets to be inscribed. The memorial would cost $8,000, and $5,500 has already been raised.

Washington State University and Project Vote Smart are launching a new partnership aimed at aiding American voters and educating WSU students. Political science and journalism faculty will launch a series of three publications: Voter’s Self-Defense Manual; Reporter’s Source Book and Vote Smart Yellow Pages. Political science chair Lance LeLoup and WSU journalism professor Susan Ross have been named to a Project Vote Smart advisory committee.

Benewah Community Hospital will offer two education courses this month. A first-aid course will be offered June 21-22, from 6-10 p.m., at the hospital. The cost of the course is $45 and the registration deadline is June 21 at noon. A pediatric CPR class will be offered June 23 from 6-9 p.m. Cost is $10 and the registration deadline is June 23 at noon.

The Pend Oreille Arts Council has started its annual membership drive. Several membership categories are available for the year. The council, governed by a 16-member volunteer board, organizes concerts, art shows and education projects. The membership runs from July 1 through June 30.

Moscow arts, library, senior and historic societies representatives met with City Council members and architects Wednesday to present ideas for the 1912 high school building. Ideas include the possibility of building science labs, ceramic studios, art galleries, recreation rooms, classrooms, a library and a theater. The group also addressed the need for accessible bathrooms, storage space and protecting art exhibits.

Dr. John McNulty and the staff of Shoshone Medical Center will host an open house June 25 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. McNulty will conduct seminars on aging, arthritis and joint replacement at 10 a.m., noon and 3 p.m. Demonstrations of knee and hip replacements will be at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The open house will include a tour of the SMC Surgery Department and operating room.

The Heritage Museum opened June 5. New exhibits include a wooden framework from a mine tunnel with ore cars on tracks, a cookhouse and a painting exhibit in the Tower Gallery. An addition to the exterior of the museum is a sign consisting of a 50-foot wooden pole with a wooden carving of a miner with a gold pan on top. The museum is open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, 1-5 p.m.
