ADAMS COUNTY

Ritzville

Shoplifters and burglars beware - the town of Ritzville is the wrong target. The Chamber of Commerce recently held a business safety presentation to bring all members up to speed on procedures to fight shoplifting and burglaries. The local Police Department gave prevention tips and information on what to do if a shoplifter is caught or a business is broken into.

FERRY COUNTY

Republic

Graduation day was especially sweet for Angie Foster. The developmentally disabled girl received her diploma from Republic High on June 5. Foster worked hard for her diploma, as did her teachers. High school faculty members traveled daily to her home to tutor her.

GRANT COUNTY

Ephrata

The recent fear of teen violence recently affected students in Ephrata. On the last day of school Friday, rumors surfaced that phone calls and letters to the school threatened violence. Vice Principal John Kinnard said the district and police followed up on all rumors and found them to be false.

LINCOLN COUNTY

Wilbur

Local citizens have noticed the price of cable-television service increased. Phil Williams attended a recent City Council meeting to ask why. He said he called provider Sun Country Cable and was told the increase was because of an increase in the city’s franchise fee. Town attorney Josh Grant said this is incorrect and that he will contact the cable company to to address the issue.

PEND OREILLE COUNTY

Newport

City workers are wondering if they’ll get a paycheck at the end of June. The city has been experiencing financial difficulties since it rolled over a $120,000 deficit from 1998. Low property and sales tax receipts this winter and spring have added to the shortfall.

SPOKANE COUNTY

Elk

The annual Elk Pioneers Days celebration will be Saturday and Sunday. The event, sponsored by the Elk Veterans of Foreign Wars Post and Auxiliary, will feature a firefighters’s breakfast, parade, chain saw and horseshoe tournaments, cakewalk, fish pond, dunk tank and pet shows. STEVENS COUNTY

Chewelah

Local high school students know what it’s like to support a worthy cause. A group of Jenkins High teens recently raised money for the Children’s Miracle Network Telethon. The group was drawn to the project by the family of Whitney Hilzinger, a local girl who benefitted from the charity. More than $460 was raised by the students.

WHITMAN COUNTY

LaCrosse

The LaCrosse 89’ers, a local theater group, will present its 11th show, “The 89’ers on Broadway!” in LaCrosse High School. Shows will run Saturday at 7:30 p.m., Sunday at 4 p.m, June 25 at 7:30 p.m. and June 26 at 4 p.m. Tickets are available for $6 for adults and $4 for students at the door or by calling (509)549-3663.

BENEWAH COUNTY

St. Maries

The old Benewah Valley School in St. Maries is being restored as a community center. A committee is raising funds for the renovations, and the inside of the building is being painted. Suggestions for the restoration include fixing the baseball diamond, installing a basketball hoop, forming a library, and making structural upgrades.

BONNER COUNTY

Priest River

The Art Bank Gallery in Priest River is featuring Christie Hensler for the month of June. Hensler’s works include spinning, weaving, basketry, paintings, prints and jewelry.

BOUNDARY COUNTY

Bonners Ferry

The Boundary County Farmers’ Market is held 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays through October 3 in the Bonners Ferry city parking lot at the corner of Kootenai Avenue and U.S. Highway 95. All items are locally grown and crafted. To reserve a space, call Marsha Semar at (208) 267-7698.

KOOTENAI COUNTY

Coeur d’Alene

The Coast Guard Auxiliary will present a boating safety course beginning today in the Kootenai Medical Center cafeteria classroom. Sessions will be 7 to 9 p.m. today and Thursday, and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. Class cost is $15, and students can register at the door. The course may qualify participants for a discount on boat insurance. For more information, call (208) 765-9688.

LATAH COUNTY

Moscow

The University of Idaho advertising team will compete at the national American Advertising Federation Student Advertising Competition in Washington, D.C., Thursday. The UI team, Sand Box Advertising, won the regional competition in April for the third time in five years. UI School of Communication instructor Mark Secrist and recently retired instructor Tim Jeness are co-advisers of the team.

SHOSHONE COUNTY

Cataldo

Canyon Elementary fifth-grade teacher Lynda Albrecht recently received a $5,000 grant from the Idaho Community Foundation. The money will help Albrecht purchase supplies for the school newspaper, the KWIN Gazette. Albrecht and her students will also be taking trips throughout the region to gather information for news stories.

MONTANA

LINCOLN COUNTY

Libby

The Lincoln County Courthouse toll-free number will be discontinued June 21. Local numbers in Troy and Eureka will be forwarded to the courthouse in Libby. The new county numbers are (406) 295-9455 in Troy and (406) 296-0404 in Eureka. The change will allow Troy and Eureka residents to avoid long distance charges, while costing the county less than the 800 number.
