Firm Wants Zone Change For Two Office Buildings
A public hearing on a controversial office project at the top of the Sunset Hill is scheduled for Tuesday at City Hall.
Developers are seeking a zone change to allow the offices on property along Assembly at Deska Drive. A&A Construction Co. of Spokane wants to build two new office buildings, four stories each, on the five-acre parcel.
City traffic engineers said the project would draw enough vehicles that a new traffic light will be needed on Sunset Boulevard either at Assembly or at Rustle streets.
The developer could be required to pay for it.
A traffic study financed by the developer showed that the project would generate as many as 124 cars during its busiest hour in the evening rush period.
Sunset Boulevard in recent years has become popular for new office buildings because of its proximity to both the airport and downtown. The properties also offer views.
The hearing on the A&A proposal will be at 9 a.m.
Previously, the property was zoned for apartments, but the terrain is so rocky it was not feasible to build housing units there.
Neighbors living near the site said offices are not compatible with the semirural uses found in the unincorporated areas to the north and west.
One nearby property has been placed under an easement for wildlife conservation.
