Shadow Suffers Setback Against Struggling Surge

The last-place Cascade Surge finally lived up to their nickname during Friday’s 4-3 soccer win over the Spokane Shadow.

Jason Aldous scored twice during a 3-0 blitz that the Surge put together between the 74th and 85th minutes at Willamette University in Salem, Ore.

Cascade earned its first win in five tries in the Northwest Division of the United Soccer Leagues. The Shadow dropped to 4-2 in the division, 10-2 overall.

The Shadow led 2-1 at 60 minutes when Jeff Rose turned on a defender and passed to Zane Higgins for a 6-yard goal.

The Surge took their first lead, 3-2, after Spokane’s Craig Hampton was called for fouling Chilo Andrade in the penalty area. Billy Merk fired in the penalty kick, his second of the match.

Spokane plays the first-place Willamette Valley Firebirds (5-0) today at Oregon State University.

Sounders match moved to Seattle

The Spokane Shadow’s second-round U.S. Open Cup match against the Seattle Sounders has been moved to Seattle.

The match was originally scheduled for Wednesday at Albi Stadium, but the Sounders changed their tune and decided to play host.

The Sounders had the right to make the choice because they’re a higher-division USL A-league team. The Shadow play in the USL Premier League.

Earlier this month, the Sounders asked Spokane to play host to the game because their home facility, Renton Memorial Stadium, was not available. They have since found another facility.

The date of the match hasn’t been determined.
