Hiawatha Elementary School Principal Rob Phillips is so upset about a recent school break-in and vandalism that he says he no longer feels safe in his own home. The culprits stole equipment and vandalized the elementary school in late May. “If our school is that vulnerable, our homes must be too,” Phillips said.
FERRY COUNTY Republic
Tourists looking for a vacation destination soon will be able to find Ferry County on the World Wide Web. George Bonney of Comp Tech Unlimited, working with county commissioners, has put together an idea for a Web site that will feature county tourist stops. Bonney will begin work on the site immediately, with initial setup to be completed in a month. The county will pay Bonney $4,000 from its tourism fund for his services, plus a $100 monthly maintenance fee.
GRANT COUNTY Ephrata
Police have arrested five teenagers following a series of vehicle break-ins and a garage burglary. Scott A. Jones and Eric E. Schultheis, both 18, and three juvenile boys have been charged with first-degree theft. The teens were caught with stolen compact discs, alcohol, tools, fishing tackle and rock-climbing equipment valued at a total of $3,000, Ephrata Police Chief Joe Varick said.
LINCOLN COUNTY Davenport
In hopes of replacing an ancient swimming pool in the city park, the City Council is asking citizens for input. The council has long debated closure and removal of a block of Sixth Street along the west side of the park to expand the park and pool. That portion of the street is closed during the summer months.
PEND OREILLE COUNTY Newport
The Newport/Oldtown Chamber of Commerce office and visitor center is ready for summer travelers. The information center has fliers on local camping, historical sites, local businesses and area recreational opportunities. Information is available Monday through Saturday. The Inland Northwest Chapter of the American Red Cross is offering reduced-rate first aid and CPR classes for $35 through Aug. 31. Classes include seven hours of instruction in one full-day session or spread over two evening classes. Those who complete the class receive a first-aid kit. The annual Grouch contest, held during the recent Town and Country Days celebration, raised $502 for the Chamber of Commerce, but it also gave folks a chance to vote for the most crusty curmudgeon in the city limits. Roger Gillaspy won by a landslide for the second year in a row.

Kamiak Butte County Park’s Summer Amphitheater Programs begin today. John Elwood and Sally Burkhart will kick off the summer season with an evening of Celtic/ American music. Heyburn State Park is offering a series of interpretive programs this weekend. Today at Hawley’s Landing campground, a recycling program will be featured at 10 a.m.; a program on global warming is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the same location. Sunday, a hike along the Lakeshore Trail to the wildlife viewing area and bird blinds will begin at the amphitheater at 9 a.m.

East Bonner County School Board trustees on Tuesday approved naming the Northside Elementary School baseball field after Elmer Jacobsen, who coached and promoted youth baseball. Jacobsen died April 25.

Officials from nine top universities and government representatives gathered in Coeur d’Alene Sunday and Monday to discuss the education of future professionals capable of securing cyberspace. The retreat was sponsored by the University of Idaho. UI President Robert Hoover hosted the gathering to explore ways the groups can cooperate to meet demands for computer security professionals.

Larry Branen, the interim dean at the University of Idaho College of Agriculture, has been selected as a finalist for the position. Branen was one of four candidates whose credentials were reviewed by the 26-member search committee. Branen served as the college’s dean from 1986-93 and was selected as interim dean when David Lineback, UI agriculture dean from 1993-98, left in November.

The Silver Hoops 3-on-3 tournament will be July 10. Depending on the number of participants, the tournament may run two days. The top three teams will receive an invitation to the National 3-on-3 tournament Labor Day weekend in Boulder, Colo. LINCOLN COUNTY Libby
The Libby School Board granted superintendent Kirby Maki a $7,000 pay raise Tuesday. Maki signed a two-year contract last year year, but will be offered $70,000 for the 1999-2000 school year. Maki came to Libby in July 1998 after serving as superintendent of the Corvallis School District.
