When the city well plugged recently, heavy machinery was needed to remove 580 feet of large pipe in an effort to unplug a screen in the pump. The pipe had to be dismantled piece by piece by grinding down each weld. The pump is now working properly.

Up to 60 local children will get an close-up and personal taste of the theater this summer when the Missoula Children’s Theatre stages The Pied Piper. The performance is July 17, but young thespians will try out for parts Monday July 12 and rehearse daily until the curtain goes up. MCT will visit 800 communities this year giving thousands of children a moment in the spotlight.

Abel Espinoza will have to wait until July 21 to find out if he’ll be tried as an adult in the June 2 murder of 17-year-old Augustino Trevino. Espinoza, 14, is accused of shooting Trevino with a pistol.

To save money, City Hall has its clerk, Debbie Burke, doing double-duty as assistant groundskeeper of the city park and cemetery. The town has given Burke a bonus to compensate for doing this work during her normal schedule.

Newport
The Newport Assisted Living project has gotten a green light. The county’s Public Hospital District just received a $300,000 grant to begin construction. The 42-unit center has been on hold for nearly two years because creditors felt the corporation was short of equity.

Riverside
Riverside High graduate Rita M. Baldwin recently received the Seattle Pacific University Dean’s Scholar Award. The $3,000 renewable scholarship is given to students who show academic potential and are active in church and school service.

Happy birthday to Wilma Ellen Giberson, who recently celebrated 103. Giberson, whose family homestead at Rice is still standing, lives in a nursing home. She was married in 1913, and spent World War II working in an aircraft plant.

City Planning Commission members will discuss county efforts to allow limited development in the Moscow-Pullman corridor and what effect it could have on Pullman during a meeting Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the City Council chambers.

Plummer
The city of Plummer will apply for a grant to assist in the cost of water system improvements. The improvements will bring an additional water main distribution line from the south side of the city to the north, and will improve water flow. Water rates will not be affected. The Skurtzendirt Mountain Bike Association will host the seventh annual mountain biking event for women of all ages July 10 and 11 at Farragut State Park. Riders will participate in two days of bike handling skills, mechanical workshops and group rides. Cost of the event is $55, which includes camping fees.

Two Kootenai County teams will compete in the State 4-H Horse Judging Contest July 13 at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds. Team One members include Judi Fairfield of Coeur d’Alene, Megan and Bonnie Ost of Post Falls and Ally Long of Rathdrum. Team Two members are Anne Radavich and Nicole Darty of Post Falls, Katie Kerfoot of Kingston and Jenna Harrelson of Coeur d’Alene. In the individual competition, Kootenai County will be represented by Jennifer Crupper, Rathdrum, and Jaime Huetter, Coeur d’Alene, at the senior level, Amanda Fahnestock, Coeur d’Alene, and Chelsea Sprouse, Post Falls, at the intermediate level and Erin Lionberger and Shea McHugh of Dalton Gardens at the junior level.

Shekinah Studios, Economic Modeling Specialists, Inc. and I-Tech Training and Services have joined 10 other businesses in the University of Idaho Business Technology Incubator. The incubator is a partnership between the city of Moscow and the Moscow-Latah County Economic Development Council. It provides affordable facilities and advising services to new high-tech companies.

Panhandle Health District will sponsor a Food Handling Safety Class on July 6. The class begins at 11 a.m. at the health district office in Kellogg. Class cost is $5. Libby
Lincoln County commissioners have authorized the parks department to work on a fee schedule for groups to hold events at J. Neils Memorial County Park. Under the proposal, daily rates to reserve facilities at the park would be $20 for groups of under 30 people, $35 for groups of 30-60, $45 for groups of 61-100, $75 for groups of 101-200 and $100 for groups of more than 200. The proposal would also include a cleaning deposit of $25-$125 depending on group size. The fees have been proposed to help meet rising maintenance costs and help pay off a $22,000 debt on the county road fund.
