Ten years ago: A judge in Cincinnati temporarily blocked a hearing by baseball Commissioner A. Bartlett Giamatti into allegations that Cincinnati Reds manager Pete Rose had gambled on baseball games.

Five years ago: Japanese Prime Minister Tsutomu Hata, faced with certain defeat in a no-confidence vote, announced his intention to resign after just two months in office.

One year ago: The Supreme Court rejected a 1997 line-item veto law as unconstitutional, and ruled that those infected with HIV are protected by the Americans With Disabilities Act. President Clinton began a nine-day trip to China in the city of Xi’an.
