Visionary home builder Curt Alexenko is developing six duplexes in the Kameron Estates. The buildings will include 10 storage units, a recreation hall, pool, mailboxes and washer/dryer units. The three and four bedroom duplexes will be low income housing.

Local logger Barton Bumatay. was named “Bull of the Woods” at the recent Prospector’s Day logging contest. Bumatay flexed his muscle in eight events. Hot on his trail were Jason Wellons and Robert Knutz.

Manager Jerry Thaut and pitcher/ shortstop Bryan Johnson of the Columbia Basin Riverdogs senior Babe Ruth team have been selected to be part of the USA Baseball Tournament of Stars.

Stan Reider, the chief criminal deputy at the Lincoln County Sheriff department has turned in his star after nearly 29 years on the force. He hopes to stay in criminal justice as an advocate for kids in the court system. Taking his place is Deputy Wade Magers of Wilbur. His official title will be undersheriff.

Pend Oreille County

Newport

Local police officer Todd Schadler has issued a public apology to the citizens of Newport. Schadler, accused of raping a Pasco prostitute on May 3, has been cleared of those charges. He was charged with misdemeanor patronizing of a prostitute. “I know I have let the chief and people of Newport down,” he said in a letter to the local newspaper. The city has not decided whether to keep him on the force.

Spokane

Spokane will host the 1999 Washington State Senior Games Aug. 12-15, featuring 22 events for competitors 50 and over.

Events include tennis, card games, billiards, golf, running, swimming and 3-on-3 basketball, and many others. The majority of the events will be held at Spokane Community College.

The Kettle Falls Interpretive Center is looking for Native American art work to display at the local museum. The museum hopes to show these special pieces through the month of July. Any form of art from beadwork and crafts to paintings and sculpture is appreciated. Anyone interested in loaning out a piece for the display, call (509) 738-2827. Jesse Savage, the son of David Savage and Jo Ellen Savage, has received a Franklin Miller Award from Kenyon College, the school he graduated from May 23. Savage, an English major, received the creative academic performance award for his creation of an online writing lab at Kenyon. A team of experts at Washington State University originally conceived the idea, and Savage worked for two summers with the team before receiving permission to set up a lab at Kenyon College, a private college in Ohio.

St. Maries

The Potlatch Corporation will plant 946,000 seedlings on its holdings around St. Maries and Clarkia this year. Western white pine, Douglas fir, western larch, lodgepole pine, Engelmann spruce and western red cedar will be hand-planted on the company’s private land in the St. Joe River drainage.

Sandpoint

The Pend Oreille Arts Council is sponsoring “Seven Days in the Life of Sandpoint,” a juried art exhibit. The contest is open to all Bonner County residents, and both professional and amateurs artists. Photos, drawings or paintings based on an event taking place in Sandpoint July 1-7, 1999, will be the subject matter. Spirit Lake Visions has collected one-third of the money needed to pay for the $2,500 fireworks ordered for the Fourth of July. Matt Whitcare, a microbiology major at the University of Idaho, is traveling to Brazil this summer to do research. Whitcare will spend one month at the University of Sao Paulo, working on genetic sequencing. The 1997 Potlatch High School graduate has worked at Anitech Labs for the last three summers.

The Kellogg School District summer food service program will run through July 9 at Sunnyside Elementary. Breakfast is served 8-8:30 a.m. and lunch between 11:30 a.m. and noon, Monday through Friday. There will be no service July 5.
