Adams County Ritzville

The local fairgrounds need sprucing up for the upcoming Wheat Lands Communities Fair. Volunteers are being sought for Friday at 2 p.m. Chores include weed-whacking, mowing, planting and tending flowers, and trimming and removing shrubs. People with construction backgrounds are needed for painting, sheetrock repair, plumbing and wiring. For information, call (509) 659-1794.

Ferry County Republic

Hoping to make the Fourth of July holiday a true blow-out? The Republic Chamber of Commerce is looking for funds to purchase fireworks. The annual fireworks display traditionally occurs at Curlew Lake, but the fireworks fund is nearly $3,000 short of its goal. Those wishing to keep the tradition alive are asked to donate at Harding’s Hardware in Republic.

Grant County Moses Lake

Although state third- and seventh-graders outscored the national averages on recent standardized tests, Moses Lake students were below the mark. Assistant Superintendent Patsy Lee says the administration is “not satisfied” with scores in the 40th to 52nd percentile. Warden, Soap Lake and Quincy students also scored low, as did most Hispanic students.

Lincoln County Davenport

Area farmers are invited to the Wilke Research Farm test project to see the latest developments in agriculture. The farm is the hub of the direct seeding project in the intermediate rainfall area of Eastern Washington. Canola, mustard and millet, along with other grain crops, are all grown in farm-size plots. The tour is set for July 12 at 12:30 p.m. one mile east of Davenport.

Pend Oreille County Newport

Firefighter recruits for several state and federal agencies were in town recently attending school. Recruits learned about the job during classes on wildfire fighting, plus practice burns in the Furport area. The practice burns were run by Colville National Forest personnel.

Spokane County Deer Park

The Deer Park School District is inviting the public to meet finalists for the district’s vacant superintendent position July 6-15. The deadline for application is today. The forums will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. each day.

A tentative schedule has been set for interviews to take place July 6-4, but the actual dates will not be determined until after the screening process ends and the top candidates are identified and contacted. For more information call 276-5051.

Stevens County Suncrest

The county Planning Department will hold a workshop tonight at 6:30 at Lake Spokane High School, 5909 Highway 291. Comments and questions will be taken concerning the state Growth Management Act, zoning, shorelines, platting and other issues.

Whitman County Pullman

Public support for a professionally produced fireworks show at Pullman’s Sunnyside Park is still needed to pay for the event. Entertainment starts at 5:30 p.m. with the Pullman Community Band, followed by the Kingpins rock band. To make a cash donation in support of the Fourth of July celebration, look for donation jars in area businesses or forward your cash donations directly to the Pullman Chamber of Commerce at 334-3564.

IDAHO

Benewah County Plummer

Plummer City Hall will begin new hours on Thursday. City Hall will open 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and close 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for lunch. The city also hired Les Hall as city marshal.

Bonner County Sandpoint

Bonner County commissioners voted unanimously June 24 to approve a request to lower the speed limit on Upland Drive from 35 to 25 mph. The request was made by seven Upland Drive households because of concerns over the speed and volume of traffic.

Boundary County Bonners Ferry

Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene

The Panhandle Basin Advisory Group will hold a public meeting July 14 to discuss the progress of the bull trout Technical Advisory Team and the Watershed Advisory Group. Issues discussed will include formation of a North Fork of the Coeur d’Alene River Watershed Advisory Group and Water Quality Standards revisions. The meeting begins at 9 a.m. at the Idaho Department of Fish and Game in Coeur d’Alene.

Latah County Moscow

Arlene Falcon has opened Tye Dye Everything in the Moscow Purple Mall. The store includes tiedyed garments from baby outfits to rayon dresses. Falcon opened a small branch shop near the University of Idaho last fall, but closed that shop to consolidate business and production at the new location. Tye Dye Everything is open 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and Falcon sells at the Moscow Farmer’s Market on Saturdays.

Shoshone County Silver Valley

The Wallace and Kellogg school districts have received more than $19,000 in Creative and Innovative/ Experimental Grants from the Idaho Department of Education. The Wallace Early Learning Center received $5,566 for its Family Fun Night. Kellogg Middle School has been awarded $6,345 for its STARS program, and Pinehurst, Canyon and Sunnyside Elementary received $7,890 for “The Art of Physics.”

MONTANA

Lincoln County Troy

The Troy Old-Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration will be Saturday and Sunday on the grounds of the Troy Museum and Visitor’s Center. The event includes a traditional hometown parade, live professional and amateur music, an art festival, quilt show, kids activities, dunking booth, a softball tournament and a fireworks display.
