Adams County Othello
Although Tuesday is noted children’s author Dr. Seuss’s birthday, it’s the children of Othello who will get the presents. To celebrate this event, local seamstress/mother Claudia Jensen has sewn 91 “Cat in the Hat” hats and bow ties.
Ferry County Curlew
Bricklayer Dennis Albert helped lay the foundation for something great in Ferry County. Albert, who has been running the bricklaying program for the Curlew Job Corps, has turned in his trowel. He was hired in 1979 to start a masonry program for the Job Corps in Ferry County and has used his experience and high standards to bring national recognition to the class. His replacement is Richard See of Post Falls.
Grant County Mattawa
A state-of-the-art sewer system is up and running in Mattawa. With the population expected to double to 6,000 residents in the next 15 years, Mattawa was in need of a sewer. Prior to this, all residents had septic tanks. The state Department of Ecology required the city to build a sewer or have building permits frozen. The new system has piping and infrastructure to expand - up to 12,000 residents can be served in the future.
Lincoln County Reardan
The four candidates for Miss Reardan-Edwall were recently Bowling for Tiaras. Hoping to raise money for a parade float, the girls took pledges for a fund-raising bowl-a-thon. In three games each, the contestants earned over $500 for the community float fund. The pageant is scheduled for March 13 at Christian Heritage School in Edwall.
Pend Oreille County Newport
They’re looking for a special gift at the Newport Miner newspaper office. The Miner, a weekly paper covering Pend Oreille and parts of Bonner counties, is getting ready for its 100th birthday party. As a present, publisher Fred Willenbrock is hoping to receive early editions readers may possess. The paper’s records are incomplete, and the first edition, Aug. 19, 1899, along with others, is missing. To help, call the Miner at (509)447-2433.
Spokane County Cheney
Eastern Washington University computer services consultant Kathy Fleming has been invited to serve on Vice President Al Gore’s National Steering Committee. Fleming, a Cheney resident and longtime Democratic Party member, will provide input from the 9th District for Gore’s presidential campaign.
Stevens County Hunters
Do you like green eggs and ham? They sure do at Columbia-Hunters School. To celebrate “Read Across America Day” and the birthday of Dr. Seuss, students are being treated to special reading activities today. Kids in all grade levels will work together in this fun day of learning.
Whitman County Pullman
This year’s Summer Job & Internship Fair begins Wednesday in the Matthew Carey Ballroom inside WSU’s CUB from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will feature more than 90 companies filling part-time, full-time and summer jobs. Students should bring an updated resume and can visit Career Services in Lighty 180 between 2-4 p.m. weekdays for help fine-tuning resumes. Benewah County St. Maries
Benewah County has hired Valdasue Steele as an agricultural extension agent. Steele will work with 4-H groups, organize workshops and draft a community development plan for the county. She holds a bachelor’s degree in agronomy and agricultural education and worked as an assistant extension agent at the University of Arizona for four years. The position was left vacant when Gene Gibson accepted a job in Bonner County last year.
Bonner County Sandpoint
April 7 is the deadline for applying for Northern Lights Inc. scholarships. The families of applicants must be members of the Northern Lights cooperative and may be graduating high school seniors entering their first year of college, or students currently enrolled in college. Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene
Jennifer Prince of Hayden Lake will speak about house plants at a Master Gardener workshop March 15. Prince owns The Seasons Room, which features gifts for the home, yard and garden. The workshop will be from 7 to 9 p.m. at the University of Idaho Kootenai County extension office in the Community Room. Cost is $5, and pre-registration and payment are required. Latah County Moscow
Gritman Medical Center has received grant funding for the Young Children and Families Project, an early childhood program. The $187,500 grant each year for two years from the J.A. and Kathryn Albertson Foundation focuses on families with children ranging from infants through age 8. Shoshone County Wallace
Wallace Public Library is waiving fees on overdue books through March 15. The fines are being overlooked in celebration of the redesigned interior of the library, which reopened Thursday. The library is open Mondays and Thursdays from noon to 8 p.m., and Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from noon to 5:30 p.m.
