Backcountry travelers should plan ahead for three in-depth first-aid-related courses conducted by certified professionals.

Swiftwater first responder, April 17. One-day course in river and flood rescue. Cost: $80.

Wilderness advanced first-aid, April 17-20. For group leaders or families who venture away from roads. No previous first-aid training required. Cost: $194.

Wilderness first responder, April 22-30. The definitive medical training course. Cost $470.
