Spring: It’S Just Around The Corner Sunday’S Sunshine Welcome Despite 40-Degree Temperature

Forget crocuses.

The first signs of spring in Coeur d’Alene were skateboarding at the skate park, walking the dog down the Centennial Trail and sitting on the beach, soaking in as much sunshine as is possible in 40-degree weather.

Spring, said people in Coeur d’Alene enjoying the out-of-doors Sunday, is just around the corner.

“It’s good to get out in fresh air, hang out with your friends,” said 15-year-old Anthony Facciano of Coeur d’Alene at the Coeur d’Alene Skate Park.

More than 40 skaters, mostly boys, rolled over the ramps, half-pipe and other obstacles at the park in weather that Facciano described as “not too hot, not too cold.

“It’s awesome. It’s a good kickoff to spring,” he said.

Clear skies greeted the morning, but by afternoon, clouds began to intermittently hide the sun.

It was sunbeams that drew Keith and Delaine Jones of Hayden Lake out to the Centennial Trail along Lake Coeur d’Alene.

When a fickle sky turned mostly overcast in the afternoon, it was their Siberian husky’s need for a walk that kept them out.

Jessi Job, 15, and her friend, 17-year-old Barb Gilliland, had thought they were in for a rare sunny day when they set off on bicycles on the trail.

“I felt like getting some exercise, and this morning, it was nice out and then it clouded over,” Job said.

And since both Coeur d’Alene residents wanted to get outside and Job wanted to try out her new bike, they went anyway.

“We’ll freeze, but it’ll be outside,” Job said.

Sandra Miller and her family drove from Spokane to skate at the Coeur d’Alene City Park.

“We kind of make this our weekend outing,” Miller said. “We call it roller day.”

They’ve been having their “roller day” every Sunday since the beginning of the year, she said.

Her husband, daughters Jennipher, 11, and Patricia, 6, and their two friends, Kayla Lake, 11, and Hailey Lake, 9, skated around the basketball courts at the park.

“We never knew this park was up here until this year,” she said, sitting on the asphalt, using the girls’ jackets for a cushion. “The weather’s perfect.”

Today’s weather will be mostly cloudy with a chance of light rain by afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. The high temperatures will be in the low 40s, according to the service.
