Newport Lets Its Play Do The Talking
Newport is purposely keeping a low profile for the State 2A tournament.
Colville has had a low profile thrust upon it.
Second-ranked Newport (21-2) opens the tournament at 9 this morning at Yakima’s SunDome against Eatonville (18-10). The Grizzlies finished 0-2 in their last appearance, 1996, and are not about to brag unless they show they belong.
“We didn’t fare very well in our last trip there, so we want to prove that we can play some good ball,” said Newport coach Mike Frederick.
University of San Francisco-bound Carey Sauer averages 25.5 points and 11.5 rebounds per game for Newport. Sauer needs 12 points to surpass 2,000 for her career.
Mary Lindburg, who played with Sauer on the ‘96 tourney team, averages 13.6 ppg and 8 rpg. Halee Haptonstall (6 assists per game), Alicia Almond and Rose Sauer all average close to double figures in scoring.
Colville (11-13) opens at noon against 10th-ranked Elma (18-5), last year’s fourth-place team. Colville last made state in 1993.
Jamie Entwistle, Ellen Shaw, Lindsey Braff and Kristen Cornwell all average around 7-8 ppg for Colville. Braff, at 5-foot-2, is the team’s No. 2 rebounder.
Lakeside brings its 21-1 record, No. 1 ranking and defending champion status to a 3:30 p.m. game with Ridgefield (15-9).
Nikki Petticrew, a Portland State recruit with 1,106 career points, leads the Eagles at 19.3 ppg, 10 rpg, 5.7 apg and 5.3 steals per game. Jen Barcus (17.5 ppg, 9.5 rpg), Jenna Giampietri (8.6 ppg), Julia Vojtech (7.8 ppg, 4.2 apg) and Katie Reome (8.3 ppg for six games) are all underclassmen.
