Othello

Students at Lutacaga Elementary are losing their principal to love. Mary Ann Neilson is retiring from her post to tie the knot with Clyde Simmons, a Wenatchee orchardist. Neilson has held the principal post in Othello for four years. Before that, she taught kindergarten, first, second and fifth grades throughout the state.

Motorists and pedestrians alike are being warned of wild animal sightings throughout the county. A local woman reports watching a bobcat hunt mice on the edge of Yenter Road, unmindful of her presence. Others have reported a pair of moose on the eastern side of Sherman Pass. Folks are asked to keep an eye out while on the road.

Electric City

The Delano Landfill is scheduled for excavation and expansion in the next two years. This could prove costly to the rural towns, including Wilbur and Almira, that own the landfill. Dwight Miller of Parametrix, Inc. suggested the Landfill Board dig 60 feet deeper and stack the garbage higher, putting off new excavation for a possible 10 years. The board has yet to make a final decision.

Local kindergartners will have toasty hands come recess time. The children were given specially made mittens by Betty Botts’ high school child development class. For an assignment, the older students fashioned the mittens for the younger set.

Pend Oreille County

Newport

The Newport High School Knowledge Bowl team took third place in an 18-team league this season. Only Post Falls and St. George’s scored higher. The Newport team roster includes Alicia Loutzenheiser, Jacob Hare, Les Ratcliff, Joel Shaver and Tighe Stuart.

Tonight’s edition of HealthTalks at 7 p.m. will focus on staying healthy while traveling. Ryan Leach, a senior at Colville High School, recently was selected by the Esther Reed Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution in Spokane to have his DAR Good Citizenship entry sent to the state level for further judging. Eleven high schools participated in the contest. Each school selected its good citizen based on the qualities of leadership, dependability, service and patriotism.

Physician Steve Wilson has been appointed to fill a board vacancy on the Pullman Memorial Hospital Board of Commissioners. Wilson is vice president of medical affairs for Regence BlueShield of Idaho, earned his medical degree from the University of Iowa and holds a master of business administration from the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis. He has lived in Pullman for two years.

St. Maries

Barbara Ross of Fernwood recently became the first woman initiated into the St. Maries Elks Lodge. When she applied, Ross did not realize that men were the only members of the local lodge, or that the club had a women’s auxiliary. The St. Maries Elks plans to induct three additional women in the near future.

Westside Fire District needs volunteer firefighters and support staff. Training includes Basic First Aid/CPR and fire suppression. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older. The Idaho Department of Transportation road report hotline is 1-888-IDA-ROAD. A menu gives callers options for obtaining road conditions in four regions of the state. The information is updated three times a day.

Kootenai County

Post Falls

A workshop to help North Idaho small businesses and farmers address the Y2K computer problem is scheduled for March 17. TechHelp, Idaho’s manufacturing extension program, will sponsor the event. The workshop will be 1-5 p.m. at the University of Idaho Research Park in Post Falls. Advance registration fee is $89. For information, call (888) 543-1222.

University of Idaho students are invited to a hearing on student fees today at 3 p.m. in the Student Union Building Gold Room. Students fees will rise nearly 10 percent this fall. UI President Bob Hoover will take recommendations to the state Board of Education. Hoover will attend the meeting along with vice president for student affairs Hal Godwin and Larry Branen, executive director for Institutional Planning and Budget.

The February unemployment rate for Shoshone County was 11.1 percent, up from 10.8 percent in January. The statistic was down from 12 percent in February 1998.

Lincoln County ranks fifth in Montana in terms of crime rate according to a study by the Montana Justice Department’s board of crime control. The county’s crime rate was 3,905 index crimes per 100,000 people in 1997. Index crimes are robbery, homicide, rape, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft. The state average was 5,117 index crimes per 100,000 people.
