Absentee Ballots Kill School Measures

From Staff

When absentee ballots were counted Friday in Stevens County, a bond measure in Springdale’s Mary Walker School District and an operating levy in the Colville School District slid from victory to defeat. But the financially strapped Northport School District held on to a levy victory.

The Colville levy had 63 percent support after Tuesday’s election, but only 56.6 percent - 1,663 to 1,276 - after the absentees were counted. School bonds and levies need at least 60 percent to pass.

The $1.15 million Mary Walker bond measure, which had 62.2 percent support on election night, now has only 54.6 percent support, 179-149.

A two-year, $85,000-a-year operating levy in the Northport School District retained 73.1 percent support, 430-158, after absentee ballots were counted. The levy had 76.8 percent support on election night.
