Camp Fire Plans Move To Valley

The Inland Empire Council of Camp Fire Boys and Girls is moving its headquarters to the Spokane Valley.

Camp Fire’s new 8,900-square-foot building at 524 N. Mullan offers three times as much space as its present quarters and will allow the non-profit youth development organization to offer more programs in the Valley.

Camp Fire owns the new building. It currently leases a smaller office in downtown Spokane, in a building that was recently sold.

“We had to find a new home,” said Dee Cerutti, the council’s director of public relations.“Being located in the Valley is really more centrally located.”

The Inland Empire Council serves both Eastern Washington and North Idaho.

Camp Fire hopes to move into its new headquarters by May 1. Plans are to offer baby-sitting classes, school-day-off programs and Saturday activities in the new building. Classes currently are being offered at various churches and community centers throughout the area.

About 12,000 students and adults participated local Camp Fire programs last year. Participation is increasingly coming from children who don’t belong to the traditional Camp Fire groups.

More families have two parents working, Cerutti said. It’s harder for them to find time and transportation for regular weekday meetings.

As a result, Camp Fire has expanded its programs to include more Saturday activities, and educational programs that provide an alternative to day care. It offers spring break day camps and day camps during school holidays.

Nonmembers also can participate in programs dealing with drug prevention, peer pressure and baby-sitting skills.

The upcoming spring break day camp will be held April 5-9 at DartLo Day Camp, on the Little Spokane River just north of Spokane. The program is open to boys and girls in kindergarten through 7th grade. Registration is required by March 31.
