Chiefs Master Portland Again

Everything came up roses for Spokane on Sunday.

The Chiefs scored three unanswered goals and held off the Portland Winter Hawks 3-1 in Western Hockey League action at the Rose Garden in Portland.

Spokane finished with a 4-3-2 record against the Winter Hawks on the season. Portland is the only team in the Western Conference that had a losing record against the Chiefs.

It took Portland just a minute to take a 1-0 lead. Todd Robinson, on assists from Brenden Morrow and Marcel Hossa, sent the puck past Chiefs goalie Mike Lencucha for his 21st goal of the year.

Daniel Bohac got the Chiefs even at the 16:44 mark of the second period. Bohac’s team-leading 26th goal of the season came on assists from Cole Fischer and David Boychuk.

Ryan Thorpe scored his 11th goal, his ninth as a Chief, to give Spokane a 2-1 lead. The goal, which came with a man advantage, was assisted by Lynn Loyns and Jan Dusanek at 9:56 of the final period.

The Chiefs sealed the win on an empty net goal by Brandin Cote at 19:13. It was Cote’s 14th goal of the season and his second empty-netter. Derek Schutz picked up an assist.

Spokane, which went 1 for 5 on the power play, improved to 18-42-9 for the season.

The Winter Hawks, who came up empty on all six of their power-play opportunities, fell to 21-35-13.

Spokane plays host to the Seattle Thunderbirds in the Arena on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
