Adams County

Ritzville

Cooperative law enforcement agreements between the city of Othello and Adams County have been finalized. The city will pay $35 a day per inmate to the county in exchange for jail use. In return, $12 will be given back to Othello for every documented dispatch call the city handles for the Sheriff’s Department.

Ferry County

Republic

The county is still chewing over its proposed barking dog ordinance. The ordinance would provide penalties for dog owners whose animals disturb neighbors. Prosecutor Steve Graham asked commissioners to address other nagging animal issues, such as abandonment, spay and neuter requirements, and dog-at-large complaints in the ordinance. The commissioners will not enact the law until the sheriff and prosecutor are in full support.

Grant County

Ephrata

Moses Lake attorney Garth Dano is suing the county for $30,000. That’s how much it cost his law firm to represent convicted teen killer Barry Loukaitis. “To date, we have received nothing for our time,” says Dano. At issue is whether the public defenders or Dano’s firm were appointed to defend Loukaitis. The firm racked up $100,000 in fees during the trial, Dano said.

Lincoln County

Davenport

The trial of a rural mail carrier accused of threatening to kill a Superior Court judge has been postponed until April 14. Ken Sides of Creston will be representing himself in the case. Sides is out of jail on bond and living in Spokane. His intimidation-of-a-judge trial will get underway in Lincoln County Superior Court before visiting Adams County Judge Richard Miller.

Mark Thursday on your calendar. The Western Mennonite School choir from Salem, Ore., will perform its annual spring concert at Spring Valley Mennonite Church. Jessica Lynn Fielder, daughter of Butch and Tonie Fielder of Deer Park, has been selected as a finalist for Washington’s 19th annual Homecoming Queen competition May 15 and 16 at the Airport Hilton in Seattle.

Stevens County

Colville

Locals know she has the voice of an angel, but Robyn Pruitt-Hamm has finally convinced the adjudicators. Pruitt-Hamm, won top prize at the National Association of Teachers New Jersey vocal competition. A Colville High graduate, Pruitt-Hamm is enrolled at Westminster Choir College, a sister school of Princeton in New Jersey. She performed three difficult classical and operatic pieces in three languages. Last year, she placed fifth in the same competition.

Kootenai County

Cataldo

The Environmental Protection Agency will discuss results of 47 soil samples taken from Mullan to Harrison at 7 p.m. March 31 at Canyon Elementary School, Schoolhouse Loop Road. The samples were taken to quantify mining contamination throughout the Coeur d’Alene basin. The open house will run from 5-9 p.m.

Shoshone County

Wallace

The Wallace Youth Association is seeking comment on improving operation and expansion of recreational use of the Wallace Youth Center. There will be a meeting from 10 a.m to noon Saturday at the Cobblestone, Bank Street, Wallace. The center opened in January and includes pool, ping pong, rental videos, arcade games and puzzles.

Bonner County

Sandpoint

Tree pruning and maintenance in downtown Sandpoint and along roads north of Church Street will begin this week. Crews have specific areas to maintain. To find out property owners’ responsibilities, contact city officials.

Plummer

The City Council is seeking bids for maintaining its electrical distribution system. The system, which serves 860 customers, has been temporarily operated by the Kootenai Electric Cooperative.

Moscow

The Miss Northern Idaho Scholarship Pageant will begin at 7:30 p.m. March 27 at the University of Idaho Administration Auditorium, Moscow. Women aged 18 to 24 compete to go on to the Miss Idaho Pageant, a preliminary Scholarship pageant for Miss America.
