Permit Ok’D For Senior Housing

More North Side housing may soon be on the way for Spokane seniors.

Hearing Examiner Greg Smith recently approved the special permit application for a Leisure Care retirement community. The Bellevue, Wash.-based company runs 29 communities throughout the West.

The company wants to build “The Belmont-Northpoint,” a 300-unit independent-living center and a 76-unit assisted-living center, on 11.33 acres at 500 E. Holland.

Building and planning staff recommended approval of the project and no one spoke in opposition to the plan during the hearing two weeks ago.

One of the few conditions Smith listed in his decision was for the applicant to dedicate 2-1/2 feet of property for right-of-way along Dakota Street to the City of Spokane. The applicant is also responsible for developing the street to city standards, which includes curb, gutter, sidewalk, paving and planting strips.
