ADAMS COUNTY Othello
The county is seeing a decline in juvenile crime. Juvenile Court Administrator Dave Gowan said that in 1997 there were 582 referrals to juvenile services. Referrals were down to 311 last year. The statistics show 2,118 detention days served in 1997, with 2,117 served in 1998. Juveniles spent an average of three days more in detention in 1998 than the previous year.
FERRY COUNTY Republic
The county is saying goodbye to longtime juvenile officer Sarah Krausse. Krausse has been in her position with the county for nearly 15 years. Krausse’s replacement will likely have a different job description. Judge Lynda Eaton has asked commissioners if the new hire could serve as probation officer for District Court as well. The position will pay $23,000-$27,000 annually.
GRANT COUNTY Ephrata
Marilyn Joy Wadena, 56, has been sentenced to seven years in prison for the stabbing death of her live-in boyfriend. Wadena, of Coulee City, fatally stabbed Michael Jeffrey, 51, on Dec. 2, 1998. She pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter.
LINCOLN COUNTY Wilbur
The crown and royal robe will be passed along to a new Miss Wilbur on Saturday. The current Miss Wilbur, Cassie Clark, will crown her replacement on Saturday from the ranks of Kristen Bahr, Mikki Kunz, Cassi Arroyo and Alayna Rivera. After the pageant, the girls and their families will be busy building a float to represent the town at regional festivals throughout the year.
PEND OREILLE COUNTY Newport
The doors are officially open at the Pend Oreille Campus Life Youth Center. The downtown facility will give kids a healthy environment in which to spend free time. The center features pool, bowling and many other activities, which are led by the Campus Life Power Team - adults committed to helping teens make wise and healthy choices.
SPOKANE COUNTY Spokane
The ambassador selection of the 1999 Interstate Fair will be at the Spokane County Fair and Expo Center in the Interconnect Building on April 17 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The age range is from high school seniors to 21 years old. STEVENS COUNTY Colville
This is the last day to buy tickets for the “Spring Has Sprung” fund-raiser. Locals know the event is the kickoff of the town’s annual spring-cleaning effort. To set the mood, Mayor Duane Scott will let the winner of a raffle shave his fuzzy face. The mayor says pruning shears are prohibited, but has not specified the style his beard can be left in. Tickets are $5 for the March 19 drawing.
WHITMAN COUNTY Pullman
A model railroad swap meet is slated for Sunday at the Beasley Performing Arts Coliseum at Washington State University from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The third annual event will feature collectibles, antiques, books, videos and other railroad-related items to buy, swap, sell or trade. A Bachman HO scale train set will be raffled off. The event is sponsored by the Palouse Empire Rail Society.

BENEWAH COUNTY St. Maries

BONNER COUNTY Sandpoint
Between 20 and 25 cases of scarlet fever, resulting from strep throat, have been reported in Bonner County. Symptoms include a sore throat, fever and a red rash on the chest or back. The illness is contagious. Treatment usually is with antibiotics. Dr. Joyce Gilbert recommends sending bottled water to school with children to eliminate the use of drinking fountains, a potential source of transmission.

MONTANA
LINCOLN COUNTY Troy
Sewage treatment project funding for Troy could mean lower monthly fees for residents. A proposal from Rural Development would give Troy $2.1 million to finish the sewage treatment project. The proposal would include a $1.47 million grant and $603,100 in loans. The funding will allow the city to connect residents and businesses south of Callahan Creek to the treatment plant, which could lower monthly sewer fees.
