Othello
Othello Community Hospital was dealt a financial blow during construction of its new addition when city water pressure was inadequate. The hospital must purchase a pump that will cost a minimum of $85,000.
FERRY COUNTY
Republic
County Jail Commander Melinda Hannaford is hoping all will be resolved over a $3,442 medical bill for an inmate being housed for the city of Republic, which has not paid. The county says the state DSHS has denied a claim submitted by the local hospital.
GRANT COUNTY
Moses Lake
The city of Moses Lake is one step closer to owning Moses Lake State Park. The bill to transfer the park to the city has passed the House and will move to the state Senate.
LINCOLN COUNTY
Wilbur
Respect will be word-one at Wilbur High School. The district is implementing more specific rules and punishments for student behavior. On the short list are offensive language, audio devices, hats and sunglasses.
Offensive language includes anything the staff finds inappropriate, abusive, profane, confrontational or showing lack of respect.
PEND OREILLE COUNTY
Newport
Twenty-five tires were slashed and two highway signs knocked down in a recent vandalism spree in Newport’s downtown. Two Priest River men are accused of $2,800 in damage, and face felony charges including malicious mischief and assault.
SPOKANE COUNTY
Deer Park
Parker Barrile, a Deer Park resident who attends Gonzaga Prep, was named to the U.S. Presidential Scholars program. Barrile is a National Merit Scholarship Program finalist, and member of the National Honor Society and Knights of the Leash, the school’s service organization for boys. He is a member of the cross country and tennis teams, and the math team, as well as being a member of the Spokane Youth Volunteer Corps.

Chewelah
The movement to revitalize downtown Chewelah is picking up steam. The city, Chamber of Commerce and Highway 395 Safety Committee have teamed up to form the Chewelah Action Team. The group will work on routing traffic and upgrading streets, lights and sidewalks.
WHITMAN COUNTY
Pullman
Four women will be honored March 25 during Washington State University’s fourth annual Women and Leadership Forum Recognition Luncheon: doctoral student and history instructor Sara Ewert, alumna Ruth Pettenger Emerson, math professor Sandra Cooper and Palouse area volunteer Althea Spencer. Keynote speaker at 8:15 a.m. will be Sister Kathleen Ross, president of Heritage College in Toppenish.
