East Adams Rural Hospital is seeing its newly purchased equipment get plenty of use. Dr. Mary Sackmann says the new heart monitor is the best investment the facility has made, and credits the new defibrillators, purchased for ambulances, with saving at least one life. Although January patient-days dropped to 22, the number of clinic visits hit 874. The hospital ended the month $57,708 in the black.

More hoop dreams for youngster Derek Gianukakis. A real sharpshooter when it comes to free throws, 9-year-old Derek hit the bull’s eye at the regional Elks Hoop Shoot in Portland last week. He originally tied with another boy, making 22 of 25 shots. Then he won the sudden-death shootout, sinking five of five. Derek won the best all-around shooter award by beating the 12- and 13-year-old division champ. He will compete in nationals in Springfield, Mass., next month.

Fearing a second loss at the polls, the Newport School Board has decided to drop the amount requested for its maintenance and operations levy. Originally, the district felt $1.14 million was needed for the next two years. Scaling back to the bare minimum of tax money required, the school is now seeking $962,500. If the voters reject the levy, district officials say programs face deep cuts.
