Maybe Peter Jennings should ask Jerry Lewis for tips on staying awake. The ABC-TV anchorman will be host of a telethonlike 27-hour special the network is planning to mark the start of the year 2000. The program will blend news and entertainment, with ABC correspondents stationed in different time zones to mark the new year’s arrival. Reporters also will be watching closely to see the immediate effect, if any, of the Y2K computer bug. And Dick Clark, veteran host of ABC’s “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve,” will have some role in the special. Jennings, who will be stationed in New York City’s Times Square, seemed almost insulted Tuesday when asked if he would stay awake for the entire 27 hours, matching Lewis’ round-the-clock performance during his annual Labor Day telethon. “Absolutely,” the veteran newsman said. “The idea of being able to go from time zone to time zone around the world and get some sense of what’s going on is exciting.”
