Driver Arrested After Fatal Crash
A Spokane man was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving following a one-car accident in the Spokane Valley early Saturday that left a passenger dead.
Andrew Doyle, 29, of Spokane, died of head trauma at the scene, the Washington State Patrol said.
Mark A. Giannou, also 29, was arrested and taken to Sacred Heart Medical Center for treatment of a fractured right leg and head lacerations. He was in stable condition late Saturday.
According to police reports, Giannou was driving west on Sprague Avenue near Fancher Road shortly after midnight when he struck a support pillar for Interstate 90.
Doyle, a 1997 graduate of the University of Idaho, wasn’t wearing a seat belt, the WSP said.
Giannou, an Eastern Washington University student, has been cited twice this year for speeding, according to court records.
He’s scheduled for a hearing next week for driving 15 mph over the speed limit in Cheney.
