WASHINGTON

Adams County

Ritzville

Local youngsters will be paying more for hot lunch at school. The school district is increasing the cost of each meal by 25 cents in the fall. Elementary students will pay $1.25 for lunch, with junior and senior high students forking over $1.50. Breakfasts will cost $1.

Ferry County

Republic

County employees will be buying their own aspirin from now on. County commissioners decided first aid kits in county quarters and vehicles will contain only basic items such as bandages, eye wash and the like. Aspirin, cortisone cream and other medications will no longer be stocked. The county spent $200 last year on these medications.

Grant County

Ephrata

With the west and east low canals filled with water since March 22, the irrigation season has begun. Smaller canals and laterals will be filling throughout the end of the month and into April. If weather is good, deliveries to farms will be available in most areas by April 9. Area water masters can be contacted for water schedules and other information.

Lincoln County

The senior center is getting a lot of attention from the Boy Scouts. Last year, Dane Rice coordinated the painting of the center as part of his Eagle Scout project. This year, Jordon Vaughan will be constructing five cedar benches and eight planters to spruce up the front of the building. Vaughan is seeking materials donations to keep down the cost of the project.

Pend Oreille County

Sullivan Lake

Crews will begin work soon on nearly $50,000 in repairs on the Sullivan Lake Dam. The county Public Utility District has contracted with Contractors Northwest Inc. of Coeur d’Alene to do the work. Several deteriorated pier noses are slated for upgrading. The pier noses provide support for the dam, as well as act as dividers for the bays. Water will continue to flow over the dam during construction.

Debby Dodson has been named training supervisor at Riverfront Park. Jason Conley, who worked at the park as a student, has been hired as the park’s full-time security officer.

Stevens County

Colville

Ron Thomas is the proud owner of a new fishing boat. The Colville man won the 16-foot Hewes craft fishing boat in the Colville Valley Partners’ Habitat for Humanity raffle. Proceeds of $25,000 from the raffle went to building a home for Gilbert Curtis and to future homes for needy families.

The new PBS video “The ACLU: A History” will be screened at the Pullman Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union’s annual meeting Wednesday at St. James Episcopal Church, 1410 Stadium Way. The free program, produced in 1998 by the PBS affiliate in Seattle, will start at 7 p.m.

St. Maries

The Benewah County Humane Society may have found a site to build a new facility. The St. Maries City Council informed the society that the property at Railroad Avenue across from Carney Products may be available. The city may lease the land to the Humane Society, but specifics have not yet been agreed upon.

Bonner County

Priest River

Jack Johnson of city public works presented proposed water and sewer regulation revisions to the Priest River City Council on March 22. Johnson’s proposals include making property owners responsible for payments, instead of renters, and a new section in the Title 13 regulations to protect the system from contamination due to backflow.

Boundary County

The Second Chance Animal Adoption Volunteers will host a rummage sale and dog fair at 9 a.m. on April 10. The event will be in the indoor arena at the Boundary County Fairgrounds. To donate items, call Alice Miller at (208) 267-2023 or Sue Esrey at (208) 267-7343.

Kootenai County

Rathdrum

The Rathdrum Lions Club is offering free health screening. The screening unit will be at the senior center April 5-6 and at Stein’s IGA April 7-8. The unit will be open from noon to 6 p.m. with two registered nurses on duty. People will be checked for diabetes, high blood pressure, glaucoma, visual acuity and hearing loss. University of Idaho students will participate in the 21st annual Intercollegiate Mining Competition in Reno in April. The two-day competition features historic and modern mining methods including gold panning, jackleg drilling, hand mucking and surveying. UI students placed second in the jackleg drilling competition last year. Students from 20 mining schools in the United States, Canada and Australia will compete this year.

The Wallace Public Library will hold weekly “story time” Thursdays at 4 p.m. Volunteer Sherri Holman will entertain children with selected books from the library’s collection.

Libby

Fewer staff may force Libby High School to change its schedule next year. The current semester block schedule requires more teachers. With eight teachers retiring at the end of this year, three at the high school, the school may not have enough teachers to support the schedule. Principal Tom Pannell and his staff will present the school board with a proposed schedule change at the April 20 meeting.
