Crop-Loss Cash Runs Thin

From Staff

Hail and high water, or even a hot summer, could easily wipe out a $1.5 billion federal crop-loss fund, specialists worry.

Already, so many Columbia Basin farmers are filing claims for crop-loss benefits that they are in danger of draining the relief pool.

A searing summer punctuated by hail storms will easily wipe out Congress’ 1998 appropriation.

Nationwide, interest in the U.S. Department of Agriculture disaster assistance program also is running high after harsh weather claimed crops in Texas and the Dakotas and California.
