Coming to terms
Those rambunctious folks at the Eastern Washington Term Limits Committee keep demanding to see the signatures of people supporting a fourth term for Rep. George Nethercutt … Rich Munson, a GOP official and longtime Nethercutt supporter, began collecting signatures on a petition of support back in March, with a target of 60,000. So where are they? committee members want to know.
Munson, a stockbroker, said he’s been busy with work and admitted that gathering that many signatures is more time-consuming than he expected. But he is getting closer to the target, he added … The real mystery seems to be who’s calling GOP precinct officers to ask for pledges of support for Nethercutt. Munson says it’s not him. The county party officials say not them, either.
Kill ‘em with kindness
Remember, this is Be Kind to Animals Week - or so the county commissioners will proclaim Tuesday. In a related matter, hunters have just 13 more days to get their spring turkey … Later this month, we’ll have New York Life Week, which is not a time to move East and enjoy the advantages of the Big Apple. It’s designed to mark the insurance company’s 100 years of business in Spokane.
If at first you don’t succeed
When Browne’s Addition boosters unfurled the green and gold banner that flies over their historic neighborhood last year for Bloomsday, they were aghast to find that founder J.J. Browne’s last name was spelled without the `e.’ They sent the banner back to the signmaker … The swag is back this year, with the “e” in place. This time the apostrophe was missing … Looks like the misspelled banner is well on its way to becoming yet another Bloomsday tradition.
You think they’d spell it rite
Because mistakes in the newspaper have come back to haunt us, we are always leery of poking fun at the spelling errors of others. But we were struck by the official notice for the Human Rights Commission Rally Against Hate last week that mentioned an invitation had been extended to “Mayor John Talbot” … Unlike the clothing store, Hizzoner spells his name with two “t’s” at the end. Not a big mistake, but a curious one - considering the announcement came on official city stationery from the Human Rights Commission.
Watching by Web
There’s a new Web site for those who like to keep track of how Congress votes on big issues. It’s called Congressvote.com, and will also let the cyber-connected send e-mail messages to their senators and representatives, and respond to surveys on issues of the day, such as Social Security and Kosovo … To get there, just put a www. in front of the name.
