Pullman Star Appeals, Scores Two

Pullman High soccer player Georges Souza was issued his second red card (ejection) of the season in Thursday’s 2-0 non-league loss to East Valley and will miss the rest of the season according to WIAA rules.

So, how is it the senior forward/ midfielder got to play Monday and scored two goals in his team’s 3-0 Great Northern League win over Medical Lake?

Pullman appealed the ruling, athletic director Mike Davis said. Souza is eligible until the WIAA makes a decision. Davis expects to hear from the WIAA by the end of the week and before the Greyhounds open the league playoffs Saturday at Riverside.

Souza - who leads the defending State 2A champion Greyhounds with 31 goals, and is the GNL’s leading scorer - was issued a yellow card against EV in the first half. He received another in the second half after he flicked the ball with his hand past a defender and ran to it and scored, EV coach Jim Spencer said. It was whistled as an intentional hand ball, Spencer said, and a second yellow card is equal to a red.

Davis said the appeal suggests there was a misapplication or misinterpretation of the rule.

Spencer said he supports Pullman in the appeal.

“I didn’t think anything he did was something to have his season end,” Spencer said.

State meet help needed

Officials and volunteers are greatly needed for the WIAA/Dairy Farmers of Washington State 2A/1A/B Track and Field Championships May 28-29 at Woodward Stadium in Cheney.

In addition, youth and adult groups interested in helping at the meet as a fund-raising activity are wanted. About 300 people are needed to help Eastern Washington University host the meet that runs 9 a.m.-8 p.m. both days.

Golf

Ferris wrapped up Greater Spokane League championships for both boys and girls in season-ending matches Monday at Indian Canyon.

Reid Hatley had a 3-under-par 69 and Corey Prugh a par 72 as the Ferris boys scored a 369 for a 26-stroke margin over runner-up Mt. Spokane. Dan Potter of Gonzaga Prep shared second with Prugh.

Prugh’s 69.8 average for four matches was the season’s best. Hatley was second at 70.2.

Ferris’ four-match total of 1,457 was 114 strokes better than No. 2 Central Valley. Mt. Spokane was third.

Lani Elston of Ferris had a 1-over-73 to lead the Saxons girls to a 421 and 76-stroke margin over Shadle Park’s 497. The Highlanders were a distance fifth in the season competition. Ferris had 1,692 to 2,013 for No. 2 CV.

Michelle Grafos of CV was second Monday with a 78 and was second to Elston’s leading 73.0 season average with an 82.8.
