County commissioners are considering a proposal to let residents dump yard waste free of charge throughout the year. Recycling Coordinator Dixie Fultz told the commissioners the idea has merit. Currently, the county has free yard debris dumping days a few times each year.
FERRY COUNTY
Republic
County officials hoping to build the Golden Tiger Trail from Republic north past the fairgrounds have learned they won’t be receiving a grant for the project. The county would like to use abandoned rail right-of-way to build a pedestrian, bike and equestrian path for public use.
GRANT COUNTY
Ephrata
Nick Tayer has never been to Easter Island, but he’ll never forget it. The eighth-grader recently took second place in the state geography bee after saying the Chilean island was part of the Galapagos Islands. That cost him a trip to the national tournament.
LINCOLN COUNTY
Davenport
Juvenile Court administrator Bill Manion says kids who are released from Martin Hall juvenile detention facility in Medical Lake “absolutely don’t want to go back” to the spartan, structured program. The majority of juvenile offenders are new to the court docket and recidivism is low. The county has reserved 183 bed days for the year and will likely exceed that number.
PEND OREILLE COUNTY
Newport
Newport’s two new police officers, Lee Bennett and Todd Shadler, recently completed work at the Spokane Police Academy. They both previously worked as federal officers at Hanford. Bennett was selected as the top tactical shooter for the class, and Shadler ran 520 miles during training, a new state record.
SPOKANE COUNTY
Deer Park
The National Arbor Day Foundation awarded Deer Park the title Tree City USA for 1999 along with 30 other Washington communities. The designation is awarded for tree-related activities.
STEVENS COUNTY
Loon Lake
Lee Hodin, son of David and Debbie Hodin, recently participated in a College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University spring break trip to a Catholic worker house, Casa Juan Diego, in Houston. Located in the Spanish barrio, it houses victims of domestic abuse and their children, as well as Central American refugees.

Pullman
The Pullman Chamber of Commerce general membership luncheon will be May 11 at noon at Jefferson Elementary School. Guest speaker is Pullman School Superintendent Doug Nelson, who will give a State of the School District address. Lunch cost is $8. RSVP to the chamber at 334-3565.

St. Maries
On May 8, letter carriers nationwide will collect food placed in plastic bags by mailboxes to feed the hungry. Last year’s postal food drive delivered 255,000 pounds of food in Idaho. Items most needed include canned meats, soup, fruits and vegetables, dried milk and cereals.

Sandpoint
Senior citizens in Sandpoint who want to continue receiving a discount on utility bills must renew their applications by May 30. The senior citizens reduced utility bill program is available to city residents age 65 and older. Single occupant households with an annual income no more than $12,500 and multiple-occupant households with a combined income of no more than $15,000 are eligible. More info: (208) 263-3561.

The Boundary County community kitchen, a service of United Methodist Church, is offering free lunch on Thursdays throughout May. Lunch begins at noon at United Methodist Church.
KOOTENAI COUNTY
Coeur d’Alene
The Bureau of Land Management has announced new user fees for four recreation sites in North Idaho. Fees at Huckleberry Campground east of St. Maries will be $12 for RVs, $9 for tent sites, $4 for extra vehicles and $4 to use the RV dump station. Killarney Lake boat launch camp sites are $8 for as many as five people, $1 for each additional person, and $8 for boat moorage. Those same rates apply to the Mica Bay boater park, although the charge for a camp unit plus boat moorage is $10. Windy Bay boater park fees are $8 for moorage for five people to camp on shore or on a vessel. Money from these sites is used for site maintenance, management and improvements.
LATAH COUNTY
Moscow
The University of Idaho will hold 1999 commencement ceremonies on its Moscow campus at 9 a.m. May 15. Gov. Dirk Kempthorne will present the commencement address in the Kibbie-ASUI Activities Center. Individual college programs will take place following the general ceremony. Statewide UI ceremonies will be May 6 in Idaho Falls, May 8 in Boise and May 11 in Coeur d’Alene.

Mullan
Mullan School District will hold kindergarten registration from 8 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Mullan Elementary School. Parents are asked to bring the child’s current immunization records and birth certificate. No kindergarten classes are scheduled for that day.

The Libby Saddle Club is sponsoring a beginning jumping and trail class Saturday. Jumping instructor Lyn Christenot will provide basics for jumping, teach the horse and rider rhythm and judgment necessary for jumping.
