Suspect Faces Mental Evaluation

A man accused of shooting a Ferry County sheriff’s deputy in the face is to undergo a mental evaluation at Eastern State Hospital in Medical Lake.

Superior Court Judge Larry Kristianson ordered a two-week examination Tuesday to determine whether the suspect, Kenneth T. Atwood, is competent to stand trial.

Atwood, 38, has been charged with attempted second-degree murder and second-degree assault. Tentatively, he is to be arraigned May 18.

Deputy Matt Lane, 36, is recovering at home from a bullet that entered his cheek and lodged in his shoulder.
