Both CV Golf Teams Finish 2Nd
Earlier this year, Central Valley golf coach Barry Poffenroth expressed satisfaction following the first of four matches that constituted the Greater Spokane League season,
“We were second in both boys and girls matches, which was a pretty nice start,” he said. “We need to see if we can maintain it.”
The Bears did, finishing second in total strokes behind leaders from Ferris after Monday’s finale.
CV’s boys were second in two of four league outings and third twice, behind Mt. Spokane. It was their 32-stroke advantage over third-place Wildcats the second week of the season that helped them prevail.
The girls team also finished second in its first two matches, placed third and fourth. It was a level of consistency that helped them finish 44 strokes ahead of third-place Gonzaga Prep.
Seniors led both teams. In four outings, Stuart Ward averaged 73.25 strokes per match finishing between fourth and sixth each week among all league golfers.
Ben Asmundson was one of three others finishing among the top 10 at varying times. He had earlier rounds of 76 and 75 and on Monday shot 74 at Indian Canyon to share fifth. Michelle Grafos carried the second-best girls average with 82.75 strokes per round.
Poffenroth is particulalry excited about the sophomores on his boys team.
“They work at it pretty hard,” he said. “If we don’t win the league in a couple of years, I’ll be pretty disappointed.”
Scholar-athletes honored
Central Valley track athlete Leslie Merideth is used to being No. 1.
She will graduate at the top of her class with perfect grades. Last last year she anchored the Bears state championship 1,600 relay team.
Merideth was one of four Valley youngsters recognized last week at the annual Greater spokane League Scholar/Athlete luncheon.
Classmate Kris White and University’s Julie Schroeder and Jake Roberts were others so honored.
Merideth competed three years in cross country and four years in track, with state success, and gymnastics at CV.
White has a 3.9 GPA, lettered three years in football, starting on the state championship team as a junior, and is a starter on CV’s baseball team. He also lettered in track.
Schroeder, a 3.98 student, started four years in soccer and track, where she’s a state veteran long and triple jumper, and three years in basketball.
Roberts, a record-setting GSL receiver with a 3.8 GPA, played three years of football and basketball and is currently in his fourth year of track. He caught a season league record 49 passes, finished second all-time with 81, and was third in season and career yardage. He’s also a state veteran track hurdler.
All belong to National Honor Society.
