WASHINGTON

Adams County

Othello

Two local boys have fists of fury as they captured titles at the recent Junior Golden Gloves boxing tournament in Tacoma. Mark Martinez and Jessie Mata won their weight classes. Martinez took top honors in the 75-pound weight class and was named Outstanding Junior Boxer for 10-11 year-olds. Mata was the uncontested champion in the 65-pound class for 10-11 year-olds. He fought older boys during the tournament and defeated them.

Ferry County

Curlew

Children at a German orphanage will be much warmer thanks to June Merchant. Merchant is a major force in the Curlew Sewing Club, which recently sent 147 quilts to needy children in Europe. Merchant also gathers used baby clothes for two shelters and a home for unwed mothers, and helps with many community projects.

Grant County

Mattawa

Residents in Mattawa have something to smile about. The doors to the city’s first dental clinic are now open. Several agencies collaborated on the project, which serves a growing population of low-income folks and migrant workers. Forty miles from any dental practice, Mattawa has long been underserved. Area dentists are needed to fill the calendar, and must be willing to accept medical coupons.

Lincoln County

Davenport

The Davenport School District Board is grappling with results of a recent student survey on drugs and alcohol. The survey found a significant number of young people from Davenport who are at risk from their use of drugs, officials said. The district says it cannot deal with the problem itself and is looking to parents and community groups to help. A forum on the subject is scheduled for May 27. Time and place have not been decided.

Pend Oreille County

Newport

Create’s Pend Oreille Players announce their presentation of “Rashomon” tonight and Sunday. The play is set in feudal Japan and tells the story of a violent crime involving a bandit and two samurai and the interpretations of that crime by four witnesses. The curtain goes up tonight at 7 p.m. at Sadie Halstead Middle School. Sunday’s performance is set for 3 p.m.

Medical Lake

The Medical Lake Cemetery Association will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Medical Lake Library, 321 E. Herb. The group works to clean up the local cemetery.

Stevens County

Colville

Local postal employees will be delivering mail and also picking up tomato soup at local homes today. The carriers are taking part in the post office’s food drive. Postal customers are encouraged to put nonperishable food in a plastic bag and leave it by the mailbox. Postal workers will pick up the bags and take them to the Colville Food Bank for distribution.

Whitman County

Colfax

The President of the Whitman County Retired Teachers’ Association, Larry Warner, is pleased to announced two Whitman County college students have been awarded $400 scholarships. Catherine Brown, a graduate of Colton High School, will use the scholarship to help complete her bachelor of arts education degree next year at Eastern Washington University, while Ben Anderson, a Colfax High School graduate, plans to receive his degree in elementary education next year from EWU.

About 90 students joined Coeur d’Alene tribal elders and other descendents for the 13th annual Antelope Run on Friday. The event honors Walking Antelope, a Coeur d’Alene Indian runner who was the first to bring back word of a U.S. Army column as it entered Coeur d’Alene country in 1858. The 31-mile trek concluded at the top of Steptoe Butte near Oakesdale, Wash.

Cynthia Mason, owner of Cynthia’s Preschool and Kindergarten, has been awarded the Bonner County Provider of the Year Award. The award is given as part of National Provider Appreciation Day. Idaho’s five northern counties have 250 providers, and one provider from each county is selected to receive the award. Cynthia’s Preschool and Kindergarten has been operating for two years.

Bonners Ferry

Due to spring breakup, the Boundary County Road and Bridge Department has imposed hauling restrictions on some county roads. Further closures are anticipated as road conditions worsen. Before hauling on county roads, call the department at (208) 267-3838.

Kootenai County

Coeur d’Alene

The North Idaho Community Resource Fair today at Silver Lake Mall will feature public-assistance agencies from throughout the region. Booths from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. include assistance for elderly family members, the hearing impaired, adolescence pregnancy prevention, Alzheimer’s disease support, the Children’s Village and Consumer Credit Counseling Service.

Latah County

Moscow

Construction began Monday on the $3.25 million swimming pool in Moscow. It will include a separate lap pool and two 30-foot-high water slides. Construction is expected to be completed by December, with the facility opening in June 2000.

Shoshone County

Silverton

Ed Eckel, John Ruggles and Art Fleming have been appointed to the East Shoshone Health District hospital board. The trio will fill the positions left open after members H.F. Magnuson, Bill Dire and Bill Campbell chose not to seek re-election. An election was scheduled, but Eckel, Ruggles and Fleming were the only ones to submit petitions to be on the ballot.

Libby

More than 200 cyclists are expected for the fifth annual Scenic Tour of the Kootenai River this weekend. Saturday, the event will include a 98-mile and a 45-mile tour along the Kootenai River and a variety of live music. Sunday’s ride will feature a 37-mile loop to Libby Dam and Lake Koocanusa. The tour is sponsored by Kootenai Valley Partners Habitat for Humanity and Aid Association for Lutherans.
