Llama Pack Trial Set

The Inland Northwest Llama Association will hold the area’s first llama pack trial at 8 a.m. on May 22 at the Mount Spokane resort.

Barbara Brady, the co-chairman for the event, said the Pack Llama Trial Association was formed in southern Idaho to create standards by which pack llamas are judged.

There are three courses for the pack animals: The basic, a 1-mile course with an elevation gain of 500 feet; the advanced, which is 5 miles and an elevation gain of 1,000 feet; and the master, which is 8 miles with an elevation gain up to 2,000 feet. Regardless of the course, each llama must negotiate one creek crossing, a jump and pick its way through dead fall.

Brady said there are about 100 llama farms in the North Idaho and Eastern Washington. The public is invited to the event and meet with participants. For more information, call Brady at 238-2998.
