Bulldogs Topple UW

Gonzaga starting pitcher Tucker Urdahl and reliever Matt Siwek combined a four-hitter Wednesday night as the Bulldogs handed the University of Washington a 7-2 baseball defeat at Husky Ballpark in Seattle.

Siwek worked 4-1/3 innings to earn the win, his sixth against four losses. He retired 13 of the 14 batters he faced, surrendering only a single and finishing with five strikeouts.

Gonzaga designated hitter Barry Matthews broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning when he unloaded his 10th home run of the season, a solo blast over the right-field fence. UW’s Kevin Ticen answered with a solo shot, his 14th, in the bottom of the inning.

The Bulldogs put the game away with a five-run seventh inning. Pinch-hitter Jared Hertz launched a solo homer, his sixth, to tie the game at 2. Adam Stokey later provided the key hit, a three-run double that UW left fielder Todd Linden lost in the lights, opening a 6-2 Bulldogs lead.

San Francisco visits Gonzaga on Saturday for a noon doubleheader.
