Amtrak Pledges Faster Trains

Former Massachusetts Gov. Michael S. Dukakis, vice chairman of the Amtrak Reform Board, says the new high-speed train service between Boston and New York will be up and running by October or November.

Amtrak, still installing electrical power lines, has pledged to have service by the end of the year.

The beleaguered service was given a last-chance infusion of $2 billion last year. A first big step comes when Amtrak begins the 150-mile-an-hour service with new locomotives and cars between Boston and Washington via New York City.

Within six months, trains will run 18 round trips daily between Boston and New York. Ten of those will use the new high-speed train that makes the one-way trip in three hours, compared to 4-1/2 to five hours.
