Zags Split Doubleheader To End Season
College baseball
Gonzaga ended its season on a low note and a high note Sunday.
The Bulldogs (27-23-2, 14-14-1) finished the season by splitting a doubleheader against the University of San Francisco at Benedetti Diamond in San Francisco.
The Dons (21-34-1, 11-18) took the first game 12-11. Gonzaga won the nightcap 12-4.
The Bulldogs’ Bo Hart led off the second game with a homer, the first of three Gonzaga balls to leave the yard.
In the first game, Jeff Pritchard provided the winning runs in the eighth inning for the Dons, hitting a three-run, inside-the-park homer to snap a 9-9 tie.
Oregon State completed a three-game sweep of visiting Washington State in Corvallis, Ore., by coming back from a two-run deficit to score a 9-7 victory in Pac-10 Conference action.
The loss for WSU (22-30, 4-20) went to Matt O’Brien (6-5), who gave up OSU’s final two runs in the seventh.
WSU’s defense, which committed six errors in the three games, cost the Cougars dearly in the final Pac-10 game of the season for both teams. Of the seven runs Jamaal Gaines allowed, just two were earned.
The University of Southern California, ranked 16th in the nation, handed the University of Washington a 17-6 Pac-10 loss in Los Angeles.
The Trojans had three consecutive homers from Jason Lane, Eric Munson and Dominic Correa in the second inning.
