Colville’S Evans Off To State Again

Defending state champion Crystal Evans of Colville won the girls 3,200-meter run on the first day of the District 7 2A track and field championships at Riverside High.

Evans finished in 11 minutes, 52 seconds for a 10-second cushion over Riverside’s Katie Prichard. Evans also won the 1,600 at state last year.

In other girls finals, Chewelah’s Chrissy Oneal, the state leader in the discus, won the event at 136 feet, 1 inch. Oneal placed second at state last year.

Chewelah’s Katey Moat won the high jump at 5 feet, 1 inch. Pullman’s Courtnie Lee jumped 16-6 to win the long jump.

Two returning state-placers won events in the boys meet. Lakeside’s Trevor Smith, sixth at state last year, won the 1,600 in 4:29.0. Medical Lake’s Ty McConnell, last year’s seventh-place state finisher, won the javelin at 168-10.

Other boys champions were: Cole Sheridan, Pullman, triple jump, 44-2; Darrell Schwenke, Colville, shot put, 50-7; and Kynan Ramsey, Riverside, pole vault, 13-0.

All other finals will be held Friday at Riverside.

Boys golf

Odessa’s team and Sprague-Harrington sophomore Colin Floyd were champions at the District 7/9 B tournament at Hangman Valley GC.

Floyd shot a 2-under 70 for a five-stroke victory over Tekoa-Oakesdale’s Anthony Buergel. Ritzville’s Chris Barker was another stroke back.

Odessa scored 141 points for an 18-point advantage over Ritzville at the 10-team tourney. The top 15 golfers advance to Monday and Tuesday’s State B tournament at MeadowWood GC.

Girls golf

Medalist Annie Kjack guided St. John-Endicott to the District 7/9 1A/B championship at The Fairways Golf Course.

Kjack, a junior, fired a 23-over-par 95 to edge Sprague-Harrington’s Emily Teel by one stroke. Adelle Hurley of Tekoa-Oakesdale and Acacia West of Kettle Falls shot 98.

SJE scored 93.5 points for a clear edge over S-H (62.5) at the 12-team tournament. The top 10 golfers will advance to the state tournament, Monday and Tuesday at Liberty Lake Golf Course.

Boys soccer

Grandview defeated East Valley (Yakima) 3-1 to earn the top seed for the State 2A quarterfinals.

Grandview (18-1) will host Great Northern League No. 2 Riverside (14-3-1) at noon Sunday for a berth in the final four. EV (14-4-1) will travel to GNL No. 1 Pullman (14-3-1) on Saturday. The time is to be announced.
