Moscow-Pullman Hearing Tonight
A public hearing on development in the eight-mile Moscow-Pullman corridor is slated for tonight at the Public Services Building in Colfax.
The 8 p.m. hearing will mark the third resurrection of the controversial cross-border debate this decade.
A corridor zoning amendment was defeated in 1990 and a revision was defeated again in 1995.
Commissioners were prompted to raise the issue again this year after a Ford dealership expressed interest in locating along the route.
For the last month, the Planning Commission has been revamping the amendment that failed in 1995 for passage as soon as this summer. The amendment includes environmental regulations such as a 50 percent set-aside for open space, as well as limitations on lighting, signs and traffic.
A variety of conditional retail uses would be allowed under the amendment, including campgrounds, hotels, hospitals, office buildings, lumber yards, grocery stores and warehouses.
If passed by the Planning Commission tonight, the amendment must be considered by the three Whitman County commissioners. The Planning Commission’s regular 7 p.m. meeting will be recessed at 8 p.m. to begin the public hearing segment of the meeting.
