Mt. Spokane students need safe walk path

I am a 15-year-old attending Mt. Spokane High. I live within walking distance to school and walk there almost every morning. When Mt. Spokane High School was built, the Mead School District put in a walk path to provide a safe place to walk to get Mt. Spokane. This path gave a place to walk other than on the shoulder of the busy highway about 50 feet away.

Recently a house was built and sold on the property that the walking path was on. These buyers of the house found they own the walk path and decided to fence it in.

I find it very frustrating not to have a safe and easy walk to go such a short distance to school. The Mead School District had the option of buying the land from the owner but ignored the need for a safe walk path. There are many others than myself who walk or ride their bicycles to school every morning. The shoulder of the highway is not a good alternative to the walk path.

The school district needs to realize the danger and make some changes. They could build a walk path next to the owner’s property or even try to buy the property from the owner. These walking conditions are not acceptable and need to be changed. Joe Schultheis Spokane
