Creative Energy

Here is another winner in the annual Our Generation Get Creative contest. Previously published winning entries can be found online at http://ourgen.spokane.net

Go Round

And so they mount their trusty steeds

You see it clearly in their eyes:

Belief their horse is what they need

To claim that daunting, mysterious prize

The music starts, the carousel spins

They cling tightly to the reins

And through their hair, they can feel the winds

As they stroke their horses’ manes

They did not, however, come for this

For each time that they go by

A hand with a ring they cannot miss

And grabbing at it they all try

Some can’t reach it, some fall trying

Some give up without a fight

The challenge remains, though, ever defying

Coming in and out of sight

Then there are those, who grab the ring

And see it not made of gold

They want the prize, they keep on trying

Until a gold ring they hold

One little girl grabs at the ring

Giving it all she can

Looks down and beams, “It’s gold!” she sings

A dream clutched tightly in her hand

The ride soon ends, the girl dismounts

Some stay on for another try

She’s met her goal, she can now announce

The others wonder, “have I?”

The girl and her mom go back to the gate

The ring’s in the hand of its founder

She wants the prize, she cannot wait

Placing her treasure on the counter

A goal met, and what’s the reward?

A pony? A queen to be crowned?

A new challenge accepted by her own accord:

A free ride on the merry-go-round
