Rival Topples Davenport Ace

They’ll crown a new girls singles champion when the State 1A/B tournament winds up a two-day run today at Central Valley High School.

Jennifer Hansen of Cascade Christian, who lost a three-set final a year ago to Christine Dickson of Davenport, turned the tables on the Gorillas senior in the semifinals and will play for the title today.

Hansen, who overcame Dickson 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, meets Wanda Freeman of Wilson Creek at 10:30.

Consolation finals begin at 9 a.m.

Freeman defeated Kazuko Fujiki of Northwest Christian 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinals.

4A, Vancouver: Three of the four Greater Spokane League entries are still alive in the consolation bracket today.

Aaryn Volkman of Central Valley lost her first-round girls singles match before winning twice in the consolation bracket, and the boys doubles teams of Karl and Peter Johnson of Lewis and Clark and Nick Mays and James VanHess of Ferris won first-round matches, lost in the second round and won in the consolation bracket.

Gonzaga Prep freshmen Marie Carroll and Marissa Flinders won their first-round match in girls doubles, but lost in the second round and in the consolation round.

3A, Seattle: East Valley’s Loren Buchanan and John Kirsch dropped a 6-0, 6-2 first-round boys doubles decision to a team from Jackson.

2A, Yakima: Pullman’s Casie Schneider and Brook Hurlbert will play for the girls doubles championship after winning twice Friday.

Losing semifinalists included Tim Zeitler and Jeremiah Johnson of Medical Lake in boys doubles and Sara Cotton of Medical Lake in girls singles.
