Sasquatch Easily Win Both Titles
With Dusty Lane and Jenni Saling setting the pace Friday, Community Colleges of Spokane turned close races into routs and successfully defended their Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges track and field championships.
Lane, who blew away the opposition to win the decathlon three weeks ago, won three events Friday, two in school- and conference-record times, to lead the Sasquatch men to a third straight title with a 204-98 margin over host Lane CC.
Saling turned in an 800-1,500 double and Cydny Edmunds completed a busy and rewarding meet to set the pace as the CCS women compiled 212 points, 96 more than runner-up Clark’s 116 for their second straight championship.
Lane, who set records with a stunning 10.36 in the 100 and 20.96 in the 200, also won the 110-meter hurdles in 14.37 seconds and was named the meet’s outstanding male performer.
Edmunds was named female athlete of the meet. She followed up her victory in the women’s heptathlon May 3-4 by finishing third in the 100- and 200-meter dashes and the 100 hurdles Friday after winning the long jump, finishing third in the high jump and fourth in the shot put on Thursday.
The Sasquatch women received a record from hammer thrower Windi Selle, whose heave of 161 feet broke the mark set last year by Suzy Heidman of Mt. Hood.
Whitney Schmaljohn repeated as women’s 200-meter champion but had to settle for second in the 400 in her bid for a double.
The CCS women went 1-2 in the 5,000 meters with Devin Huck besting twin sister Colleen, the NWAACC cross country champion. Devin timed 19:02.59 to Colleen’s 19:02.64. Three other Sasquatch were in the top nine - Nichole Edwards fifth, Angie Simmers sixth and Holly Weiler ninth.
The Sasquatch also won both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.
A sweep of the relays also was instrumental in the men’s romp, as were a 1-2 finish in the 5,000, in which Brandon Hauver deprived teammate Jim Reed of a triple, and in the steeplechase.
In the 5,000, Hauver won in 15:36.85, while Reed, who won the 1,500 and steeplechase, clocked 15:41.45. Reed won the 1,500 in 4:02.80 and led a 1-2 CCS finish in the steeplechase in 9:21. Matt Humann ran second and teammate Nick Vollmer fourth.
CCS added to its total in the field events, with Tim Marks winning the high jump (6-11); Devion Tensley following up Thursday’s long jump win by taking the triple jump (48-8-1/2); and Ryan Gill winning the javelin (207-6).
