With record snowpack in the mountains, residents can learn at Curlew’s Barrel Derby on June 6 and Prospectors Days in Republic on June 12 about flood mitigation seminars the County Planning Department and Eastern Washington University are planning.

GRANT COUNTY

Royal City

Parents are still calling in their thanks to the Royal School staff. When a fire alarm was set off recently, teachers didn’t send children out of the building, but first locked down all classrooms to see if it was a ploy to get kids in the open. Principal Kent Andersen was home eating lunch, but praised his staff for foresight in making sure the school was prepared for violence. There was no fire.

LINCOLN COUNTY

Davenport

Lincoln Hospital is again looking for a new administrator. Kenny Hall, named interim administrator in November, then acting chief in February, will resign July 23. Hall says the resignation was “a family decision.” Hall will stay until an interim administrator is hired. The hospital has had three administrators in a little over two years. The new search is expected to take six months.

PEND OREILLE COUNTY

Newport

The Pend Oreille Public Utilities District will rehabilitate three campgrounds along the Pend Oreille River as part of the Federal Energy Regulation Commission’s new rules. The PUD also has an agreement with the Kalispel Tribe to upgrade habitats along the river.

SPOKANE COUNTY

Cheney

Eastern Washington University’s Gallery Program is accepting proposals for its 1999/2000 season. Photographers should submit 10-20 slides of current work, a resume, a self-addressed stamped envelope and $15 to EWU’s Gallery Program, Dept. of Art, MS-102, 526 Fifth St., Cheney, WA 99004. Today’s Nostalgia Days Celebration will include a Chokes & Spokes Car Club classic car show. The 1950s festivities also include a parade, food booths, tailgate swap meet and entertainment, concluding with “An Act of Murder,” a play by the Park Avenue Players.

WHITMAN COUNTY

Colfax

A “Save Our Dams” benefit concert will feature Wylie and the Wild West, champion yodeler Wylie Gustafson, at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Palouse Empire Fairgrounds community building. Tickets are $7, or $20 per family and available at the door.

BENEWAH COUNTY

St.Maries

The First Judicial District CASA program will present a community information meeting Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the courtroom of the Benewah County Courthouse. CASA supervises court-appointed volunteers who represent abused children in court and other proceedings. The meeting will discuss the CASA’s mission, the urgent need for representatives and the guardian training beginning June 17 at the Wellness center in Plummer. Sandpoint

Coldwater Creek will move its Sandpoint return department to its new East Coast Operation Center near Parkersburg, W. Va., in July. About 70 employees will be offered transfers to the Parkersburg facility or the Sandpoint shipping and packing department. They will receive the same hours and pay. Coeur d’Alene

The All Breed Dog Show and Obedience Trial will be at 8:30 a.m. Monday and Tuesday at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds. The Obedience Trial will test the dog’s ability to follow its owner’s commands.

LATAH COUNTY

Potlatch

Longtime Potlatch School District employee Melva Dial is retiring after 26 years. For 22 years, Dial was secretary for the Potlatch Jr.-Sr. High School, where she often volunteered extra time to help coordinate student, staff and parent activities. An open house reception in her honor is Friday at 5:30 p.m. at the Log Cabin in Potlatch. Special memories of Melva to be included in a scrapbook should be sent to Jo Minden or Jeanette Rogers at Potlatch Jr.-Sr. High School.

SHOSHONE COUNTY

Wallace

With the help of volunteers, the Wallace streetscape project is nearing completion, along Bank, Cedar, Sixth and Pine streets. The improvements include flower baskets, benches, trees and plants.

LINCOLN COUNTY

Libby

University of Montana assistant volleyball coaches Colleen Frohlich and Cindy Willey will help teach sixth- through 12th-grade students at a volleyball camp July 20-22 at Libby High School. The camp for grades 6-8 will be 8-11 a.m. and cost $40 each, while the camp for grades 9-12 will cost $70 each and be from noon to 3 p.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. UM volleyball player Katie Almquist will also help.
