Win a trip to Ireland! Students ages 12 to 18 who live in The Spokesman-Review’s home delivery circulation area are eligible to enter this year’s Young Columbus Essay Contest. To enter, look through The Spokesman-Review past or present and find someone who as made an difference in society. Collect the articles or series of articles and write a one-page summary of the person’s positive contributions. Then write a 400-word fictional letter to this person explaining how you relate to their circumstances and how they have inspired you to make a difference in your community. Complete entry forms are available by calling (509) 459-5071 or (800) 338-8801, ext. 5071. Deadline to enter is Nov. 30.

Scholarships available. Applications are still being accepted for the 2000 Washington/Oregon National Teenage Scholarship Program to be held April 7 and 8 at the Scottish Rites Center in Portland, Ore. More than $100,000 in cash and scholarships will be awarded. Make a difference, win big bucks. Enter react magazine’s 2000 Take Action Awards contest and win a $20,000 college scholarship. The Awards recognize students whose work has had a positive effect on their school, community, the nation or world. The contest is open to all students who will be between the ages of 12 and 18 as of June 1 who are not yet in college and are legal U.S. residents. To enter, submit a 500-word typed essay describing in detail your achievement, particularly how the effort got started, where it is located, who the participants are, how many people are involved and the measurable impact it has had on the community.
