Ritzville Warehouse Co. has reported that its 106th year in business was a profitable one. Construction of a 40-million-gallon ethanol plant in Moses Lake is still a go with Doug MacKenzie of Pacific Rim Ethanol slated to head up the project. Ground will be broken in March or April.

The county Public Works Department will foot more of the bill for repairs on West Kettle River Road. The department was supposed to discuss roadwork billing with Echo Bay Minerals before repair work began so they could decide how to split costs. Because communications broke down, the mining company will pay $7,365.58 of the original $14,731.16.

John Antosz will be serving as judge in Grant County Superior Court. Gov. Gary Locke recently appointed Antosz to preside over a courtroom in Ephrata. A third judge was needed to handle a growing criminal caseload. Antosz has practiced law since 1984 and has a doctorate from Gonzaga University Law School.

K/P Productions directors Linda Knapp and Eileen Paulson are putting together the Rogers and Hammerstein favorite “Oklahoma.” Rehearsals are under way, with the performance slated for Dec. 2-5 at Harrington High School Auditorium. Cast members include Dr. Douglas Teel and Jennie Fitzpatrick of Harrington, Paula Steinolfson of Davenport, Doug Mielke of Rocklyn and Reardan resident Theresa Kappus.

Construction work on Bess Heridan Middle School and Adam Wike Gymnasium is coming along under budget. However, ALSC Architects said the project is two weeks behind schedule. Problems have cropped up in locker room roofing, costing $27,000 from the project contingency fund. Also, the concrete slab under the gym floor is not level in places. ALSC is considering ways to fix this.

Peggy Burrell, program manager at Spokane Neighborhood Action Programs, was honored with a “Friend of Housing Award” by the Washington State Finance Commission on Tuesday night in Seattle. Burrell was recognized for her accomplishments in making home ownership a reality for low- to moderate-income first-time homebuyers. Friends of Housing Award recipients are nominated by their peers working in public, private and independent sectors.

Local high school students have their pick of jobs to experience in the Community Resource Training program. The program began with 35 local businesses participating, and has built to 150 jobs for teens. Students are not paid, but gain experience to build their resumes.

The ASWSU Outdoor Recreation Center and ski team is having its 25th annual Ski Show and Outdoor Equipment Swap and Sale on Saturday. The event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. has become a longstanding tradition among skiers and other winter sports enthusiasts in the area.
Twelve shops from around the region, as well as hundreds of local people, will sell new and used ski and winter sports equipment. Those who want to sell equipment can check it in Friday from 3 to 9 p.m. at the WSU fieldhouse. Organizers take 15 percent of the sale price for all items sold. Unsold equipment can be picked up from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Admission costs $1. For more information contact ASWSU Outdoor Recreation Center at 335-2651.

St. Maries
University of Idaho architectural students are working to develop preliminary plans for the proposed civic center in St. Maries. The fourth- and fifth-year students will develop initial concepts for the facility, which will include an indoor pool and exercise facility. Wendy McClure, an associate professor at the Department of Architecture at UI, is coordinating the project on behalf of the St. Joe Foundation, which is underwriting expenses for the students.

The Idaho Division of Environmental Quality has extended the comment period on the state’s revised 1999 Idaho Nonpoint Source Management Program Plan to Nov. 29. The plan outlines the state’s strategy to meet the Environmental Protection Agency’s revised Clean Water Act. Copies of the plan are available at the regional DEQ offices or from the DEQ Web page at www2.state.id.us/deq.

Bonners Ferry artists Maureen Lange and Diana Moses Botkin will display and sell original works and prints this month at their new gallery. North Idaho College Snowriders Club is sponsoring “The Realm,” a ski movie, at 6 p.m. Sunday in Boswell Hall Schuler Auditorium. The movie is a one-hour extreme skiing experience featuring skiers maneuvering through first descents, extreme freestyle aerials and deep powder. Admission is $8 at the door or $7 with a donation of a can of food. Tickets are available at the NIC Boswell Hall Box Office or the Ski Shack in Hayden Lake.

The University of Idaho will be offering a low-cost bus service for students traveling to southern Idaho during fall and winter breaks. A round trip ticket to Boise will cost $60, with stops in New Meadows, Payette and Weiser. Travel destinations to Twin Falls, Pocatello and Idaho Falls will cost $90 round trip. For the fall holiday, a bus will depart at 8 a.m. on Nov. 21 and return Nov. 28. During the winter holiday, the bus will depart Moscow at 5 p.m. Dec. 17 and return Jan. 9. The Wallace Business Community Association will sponsor its annual open house Nov. 16 for the first holiday celebration in the city. Businesses will remain open from 5-8 p.m. to help draw customers downtown. Shoppers will have an opportunity to win prizes from a drawing. To enter, shoppers must visit at least nine stores to receive stamps to validate entry coupons, which must be returned to the Oasis Bordello Museum before 8:15 p.m.

Libby City Council has hired Roger Guches as a police officer to fill the slot created by the acceptance of a grant for a school resource officer. Guches currently is employed as a detention officer for Lincoln County. Officer Scott Hutchings will take the position of a school resource officer this month. The resource officer position is fully funded by a federal grant. The officer will be assigned to Libby schools during school hours and will be available to patrol the city when school is not in session.
