Othello

More than 100 kids each day are using the new Othello Girls and Boys Club for fun and more. Coordinator Debbie Sanchez says the computer room is often used for school work. A library is under construction. After the work is done, the games begin.

Ferry County

Inchelium

The Ferry County AmeriCorps team recently reworked the WSU Cooperative Extension 4-H Challenge course. Twelve team members revegetated the lakeshore, built a fence and new challenge elements. The workers received training in communication, support and teambuilding on the course in return for their labor.

Grant County

Grand Coulee

The town recently drilled a 320 foot test well which yielded 600 gallons per minute, but the town needs 800 gallons per minute to meet needs. “Hopefully, it’s going to be Grand Coulee’s salvation in avoiding the filtration plant,” said Mayor Bob Seiler, noting estimates are a filtration plant would cost $7 million.

This is the last day for open burning of the fall season. Fire Chief Gene Johnson opened the burning season for yard waste Oct. 29. He stresses burning barrels are not allowed at any time. Those burning yard waste are expected to be on guard with water available at all times.

Pend Oreille County

Newport

Monday’s school board meeting will look at how to bus 41 kids from Lazy Acres trailer park so they don’t have to walk across train tracks, a pond and Highway 2. The school has moved an existing bus stop closer to Lazy Acres, but residents are not satisfied. The district will have to pay for the route as state has no funds for busing students within one mile of the school.

The Cooperative Extension Service’s Ag Horizons team will conduct a farm pest management workshop Nov. 16 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Spokane extension office, 222 N. Havana. It will include discussions on biology and management of the cereal leaf beetle, weed management, the effects of economic stress on farm families and pesticides for alternative and minor crops. The cost is $15, which includes lunch. After Nov. 13, the cost is $25. To register, call 477-2160.

Colville

Stimson Lumber recently gave $5,000 to the Colville Volunteer Food and Resource Center. This is the third year Stimson has donated this sum to restock empty shelves. Food Bank officials say they are serving nearly 50 new families, along with over 200 “regulars.” They say more working families are looking for help with food than ever.

Whitman County

Pullman

As part of its continuing effort to inform the public on the proposed bond issue of remodeling Lincoln Middle School, Pullman School District officials will conduct a walk-through of the school Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. Those interested should meet at the front entrance by 5:30 p.m. Also, the Franklin PTA will host a parent seminar, “Homemade Learning,” at 7:30 p.m. in the Franklin cafeteria.

West Bonner County School District No. 83 will hold a joint board meeting at Sandpoint High School on Nov. 17 with District 84. The board will present results of the audit of District 82 and decide how the division of District 82’s assets and liabilities between 83 and 84 will go.

Boundary County

Bonners Ferry

The Bonners Ferry Seniors Hospitality Center offers meals at noon Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. The center sponsors white elephant bingo the second and fourth Mondays of the month, movies the third Wednesday, blood pressure checks Mondays and every other Tuesday. Kootenai County

Post Falls

The University of Idaho Cooperative Extension System will offer a forestry shortcourse in Post Falls on Tuesdays from 6:30-9:30 p.m. starting this week through Dec. 14 at the UI Riverbend Research Park. The course will include basic forest ecology and show how to develop a written forest management plan.

Latah County

Moscow

The University of Idaho will offer a low-cost bus service for students traveling to southern Idaho during fall and winter breaks. A round trip to Boise will cost $60, with stops in New Meadows, Payette and Weiser. Trips to Twin Falls, Pocatello and Idaho Falls will cost $90 round trip. For the fall holiday, a bus will depart at 8 a.m. Nov. 21 and return Nov. 28. During the winter holiday, the bus will depart Moscow at 5 p.m. Dec. 17 and arrive back Jan. 9. The Wardner Planning and Zoning Commission recently honored Glen Ogden for his service on the commission. Ogden’s sixyear term expired in September. He has been a resident of Wardner since 1947.

Libby resident Bruce Vincent has been elected chairman of the People for the USA board of directors. Vincent has been serving as the board vice president the past year. He is also president of Alliance for America and co-founder of Communities for a Great Northwest.
