Denmark Investigating German Spy Suspects
Up to 50 Danes are under investigation for allegedly spying for the former East German secret police, news reports said Monday.
Formal spying charges would be filed after Danish authorities receive archive files from the former East German secret police in a month or two, the head of the Danish intelligence agency was quoted as saying in the Berlingske Tidende newspaper. The official, Birgitte Stampe, could not immediately be reached for comment.
Up to 50 Danes are suspected, Justice Minister Frank Jensen said, according to the Politiken daily newspaper. They could face life in prison if charged and convicted.
Denmark’s intelligence agency contacted Germany about the archived records earlier this year after experts had decoded important files about East Germany’s former spying network.
