Selfish Hoarders Get Rebuke From Reader From The Spokesman-Review, July 9, 1950
To the Editor of The Spokesman-Review:
The pigs are with us again!
Last night I sat in the home of an air force pilot who was slated to leave for the orient today. I saw his eyes well with tears as he kissed his 2-year-old son goodnight and goodbye. He saw three action-filled years in World War II, but now he’s off again to fight for our way of life.
Today I saw a man step out of his 1950 model car and order a set of five tires; then in a very loud voice he ordered “an extra set of five - I’ll put ‘em in the basement!”
Today I saw a man pay for 300 pounds of sugar and watched him pack it all out to his car, a 1935 model.
Today a neighbor woman bragged to my wife that she and her husband would soon be off on a motor trip to California and Mexico - and that she will draw unemployment compensation the while.
Yes, the pigs are with us again! And their stomachs are strong - much stronger than mine. Peter Burnham Spokane
