Tamil Guerrillas Attack Base
Tamil Tiger rebels and government soldiers battled near a key seaside military base Monday, and six rebels were reported killed in fighting nearby.
A military spokesman said the troops used artillery and mortar fire to fend off a rebel attack against the west coast base of Talladi, 135 miles north of the Sri Lankan capital Colombo.
The rebels also fired artillery shells at Murunkan, 12 miles southeast of Talladi, the military said.
“We are taking all military measures to counter the terrorist attack,” said Defense Ministry spokesman Brig. Sunil Tennekoon.
Though rebel shells were fired at the camp, “there is no threat to the base and we are holding fine,” he said. Tennekoon said six rebels were killed by army fire as they moved into Adampan, a town three miles from Talladi.
