Thanksgiving Services Planned Central Methodist, St. Ann’S Catholic Church Offering Dinners
Today is Thanksgiving, a day to spend time with family and friends, feast on turkey and all the trimmings and give thanks for all our blessings.
A few South Side houses of worship are having services today, so some residents may decide to put the turkey in the oven and go give thanks.
St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2 W. Third, begins its worship service at 10 a.m. today. The church will be collecting canned goods for the Union Gospel Mission. Any cash offerings received will be donated to the Spokane Food Bank.
The First Church of Christ, Scientist, will start worship at 10 a.m. today. The church is located at 310 E. 14th.
Temple Beth Shalom, 1322 E. 20th, is the site of this year’s community interfaith Thanksgiving worship service sponsored by the Spokane Council of Ecumenical Ministries.
The service, with the theme “Open Wide the Doors of Your Heart,” begins at 10 a.m. today. The Rev. Ron Greene and Sister Cathy Beckley, interim co-directors of the ecumenical council, will preach, and the Ukrainian Choir of the Slavic Baptist Church will perform.
Representatives of area Christian, Jewish, Muslim and Baha’i faiths will be present.
Canned food will be collected for the Spokane Food Bank. Any cash offerings received will benefit the Spokane Food Bank and the Spokane Council of Ecumenical Ministries.
Thanksgiving dinners offered
Central United Methodist Church, 518 W. Third, will serve a free Thanksgiving dinner today from 1 to 3 p.m. All are welcome to attend.
St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church, 2120 E. First, will serve a free Thanksgiving dinner today at 1 p.m.
Study Handel’s `Messiah’
Hamblen Park Presbyterian Church, 4102 S. Crestline, will start a new four-week class on Sunday. Titled “Hallelujah: The Bible and Handel’s Messiah,” the class will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. each Sunday.
The class will explore the biblical text on which “Messiah” is based.
The class is free, but there is a $17 book.

Advent luncheon planned
The women of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 314 S. Spruce, are planning an Advent luncheon for Dec. 4. The event will begin with a social hour at 11:30 a.m., and lunch will be served at noon. The Cannon Street Grill is catering the event.
The cost is $7.75, and tickets must be purchased in advance by calling the church office at 838-4409.
Organ music at cathedral
Organist Aleksandr Kirillov will perform in concert at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes, 1115 W. Riverside. Kirillov, a junior at St. George’s School in Spokane, is a native of Moscow, Russia, who immigrated to the United States with his family several years ago. He currently is the organist at Mary Queen Parish and St. Patrick’s Church.
The concert is free, but donations will be accepted. All are welcome.
